New (Old) Power Amp Day. But first the back story. So yesterday I had posted that I needed to go cut some wood siding in half to fit in our Sprinter van that a local couple was giving away. This was 6 16ft 1x18 western red cedar siding planks. Their house was built in 2007 and I think these had been sitting there ever since (this couple just bought the place last year). So I cut them into 9 1/2 ft and 6 1/2 pieces, the longer ones went in the Sprinter and the wife drove our Honda Pilot which the 6 1/2 ft ones went in. After I had them cut and loaded the couple’s wife came out and started talking with us. My wife and her hit it off immediately as they were both into gardening.

So the husband comes out a few minutes later and we start BSing. Turns out he was a sound engineer touring with major acts for 20 years from the 70s into the 90s. He toured with Fleetwood Mac, Frank Zappa, ZZ Top, Rare Earth, etc. We wound up going inside, all 4 of us, and talking for over 2 hours. He has a few guitars and just dabbles in playing.
So we wind up in the garage after a while and he goes, “you interested in an old PA amp?”. “What is it?” I asked. It turns out it’s and old Crown DC300A 300W amp in an anvil case. He just gave it to me as it was just cluttering his garage floor. I’m guessing it’s from the late 70’s or early 80’s. I also assume I’ll need to replace the electrolytic caps.
Here’s a couple of shots of the amp and his old Gibson “test” guitar.
