i put this over at ST so i figured id put it here too.

for those of you living in areas where there are copperheads and other venomous snakes, pay extra attention to what you are doing for the next few months.
the cicadas are emerging this month and copperheads will be out in force hunting them.
a camping buddy was bitten last month and it took 16 viles of antivenom to get him right.
he told me it was one of the worst pains ever.
so, be careful.

Thats insane man, sorry to hear that about your friend, hope they're ok. Last year we were in the Brood IX hatching of the 17-year cicadas for this area and were absolutely swarmed with them. I seen we'll be getting a wave of this one, Brood X as well and where its very mountainous here, that would definitely be a problem of copperheads and timber rattlesnakes.

Yippie lol i have almost zero phobias except one MASSIVE, crippling fear and thats insects. I dont discriminate, i truly recoil at nearly all of them with more than 4 legs or 2 wings, save maybe a butterfly, earthworm or housefly lol

The cicadas from last year made me live in terror for a couple weeks, especially when i was doing yardwork and one flew down and landed on my forehead. I missed my truck by a few inches when i threw my shovel, screaming bloody murder and ran into my house. Kids laughed their asses off at me and the neighbors enjoyed that im sure lol

I catch and relocate all the neighborhood snakes and have for years.
Ill gladly relocate the usual Garter Snakes, Rat Snakes and even make a noble attempt at Black Snakes ( when they arent striking). The venomous ones however, i steer clear and make sure they're well away from the kids. I wont kill one whatsoever because they are extremely valuable in keeping rodents away around here, especially being surrounded by woods.

I had a pet Northern pacific rattlesnake that lived over 20 years. I raised him from a night crawler sized hatchling. His enclosure was created from a 300 gallon salt water aquarium and was designed to simulate brumation as well as day and night. I would remove him from his enclosure only with a pole, but once free of his enclosure, I could free handle him. People do not realize how intelligent these animals are. My snake would come when I called it and many people laughed when I told them this. However, recently, I saw a video on You Tube from Texas Reptile Zoo where one of their rattlesnakes will come when you call it...

Here's a photos of him on one of our excursions from 2003. I took him for regular "walks" in our pastures and he would go down holes and prey on gophers.

My personal mantra is I kill nothing that is not trying to - and is capable of - killing me. Houseflies are the noted exception.
