When Stratocaster Nuts Drive You Nuts - Keeping The 6-Screw Fender Tremolo In Tune:

Robert, DID you even try to string up the guitar with the ORIGINAL cut grooves in the nut. Regardless of string height above frets on neck, just to see how the stock Tusq nut performed compared to your initial dressed and low e tuning issues scenario?

I am curious as to why you initially decided to mess around with the slots in the first place, knowing that your playing style usually wears out nuts in a couple months and will certainly wear this one out in short order?

IMPORTANT NOTE:

I was told by the local guitar tech that the Gotoh SD-91 Vintage Press-In Bushing Style Tuners were "cheap Jap junk" and I simply did not agree with this ideology. After checking them for movement with a dial indicator, I saw absolutely zero movement in the tuners.

HOLY SHIP a lot happened while I slept.

I read the first couple sentences, Saw the first pic of the head and Tusq nut as it arrived. Minimal groove for Low E string. then saw this pic HUGE looking groove I saw yesterday. Kind of was suspecting a groove issue which is why I think I made a comment about string swaps, maybe even mentioned using a E from a set of 11's in there. OR just thought it and held off my theory. I will hold off on commenting further till I read the rest.

You'll really hate this....

The guy who let me watch him make nuts was adament that deep slots would keep the strings from popping out under sever usage and I have always made them deep for that reason...

My picking is pretty violent. When I switched to Fender mediums - about 20 years ago - I quit breaking strings and started killing picks....but its easier to change picks than strings mid-show.

Here's a typical break:

I pick like this:

Another nicely worn pick. They feel good like this. I won't switch until it breaks.

Another pick casualty...
