What are the implications of this trend?
Is this a sound business decision to cash out equity for these older artists with whom this move seems to be popular with?
Reminds me of the firms that offer you a lump some for a structured settlement.
You get your money now, at a discounted amount of the long term settlement total.
So, a lump some instead of royalties trickling in over time?

I can't fault them. As you age priorities change. I'd rather be comfortable for the rest of my life than be worrying about how to keep up my life style. I'm sure most of the artists doing this will still be making music but they will be doing it because they enjoy it. They will do it for themselves and not worry if it will sell or not.

He kicks back on Kauai, North Shore. I suppose Taj Mahal is his neighbor.
The last time I spoke with him, we were arguing over who's honor was bigger.
I said it was an honor to meet him...and he said it was a bigger honor to meet me.
And so we discussed this for a while until we gave up trying to decide what honor was greater.
But the coolest thing he did was:
After the hurricane hit, he organized a free concert at Lihue Stadium.
Crosby Stills and Nash, Jimmy Buffett, Jackson Brown, Willie Nelson, Buffy St. Marie, and Shiela E was playing percussion for Jackson Browne.
That was a good concert, besides being free.

Haven't heard Buffy St. Marie's name or seen her anywhere in years. She is now 80 yrs young.

I've been hearing from several artists that selling off the rights made sense for them. Get paid out a large sum they can invest and retire on. With the current state of the music industry, sales have been down for years. The only real royalties are coming from airplay. If you're not in the top twenty, chances are that you're not getting played on classic rock radio stations. With outlets like Spotify and Pandora, you need about 100,000 downloads before you see one dollar. An unknown artist can make slightly better money on Bandcamp. So, if you're someone who may not get as much airplay as Crosby, sell out and let someone else take the gamble on making money off of the publishing rights.
