Don't forget to just play

This thread might have gotten to me.

For the past few days I have just been playing. Rediscovered an old bunch of riffs I smashed together in some ugly medley that I used to use as a sort of warmup before jamming. Then something happened and I came up with a couple riffs that I've been building on and I might actually have something going on finally.

Its like telling jokes, you start off with a few, next thing you know something clicks in your head and leads you into another joke ,and another one and so on.

Everything I have heard you record has potential. You have some very cool riffs, and that is how many great song ideas originate.
I thank you sir for the compliment, I also need to try and remember some of the ones that I thought were fairly complete , and put in the subtle changes that may evolve into them.
Cheers

I have a dual problem. I started building amps about 3 years ago. I am totally hooked on it. I’ll get one built, fix any goofs, test it and then it’s on to the next one it seems. Almost no playing time. So I sit here with unplayed guitars and amps. The man cave is filling up.

Better start selling some Far Rider....:) make a bit of cash..

Well, My original point in this thread was to ditch practicing for a little while, and just play something for fun without worrying if it is correct, or "good enough" or whatever. Just to turn off your brain, and put your fingers on the strings. Maybe experiment a little bit.

It has gone off the rails and become all about practice. :hijacked:

One tried. The others didn't. :D

I'll play with you, I know that you can play. Here try this...

I sat down with this yesterday. Instead of just playing something over your track I figured I'd go learn it, so I got the Chordettes' version. I started transcribing the chords and found the key, and that's where things started to go wrong. I distrust my ears so I went with my brain, trying to fit the chords into the key and it didn't work. Finally I cheated and looked up the chords. Lesson learned; start using your ears dummy...

The song is interesting, I think I have a pretty good understanding of at least basic music theory (the one that got in my way this time) but I couldn't even begin explaining the theory behind why this progression works. It's lovely!

Just happened to run across this video today. I have a lot of respect for Steve Vai as a musician, and what he talks about in this video is exactly the point I was trying to make in my OP.

Yeah, my suggestion was really to learn the tune. It's quite simple but interesting to play. I learned it years ago from the sheet music. It's based on the circle of 4ths.

Bout time there youngin
Much agreed.
Might have to go this one alone, LRT still isn't in the mood to play. Neither was I, until I just played the damn guitar for a few days.

I have a new mic on order and I really need to get back to relearning how to work with the interface and Reaper anyway...this could give me an opportunity to work alone and see what happens. That's not something I have done in some time.

I have purposely avoided the jamroom...I switched guitars, amps, environments, anything to make it seem new again. I can't wait to get in there and play it on the big stuff but I shall refrain until I've honed my work into something more fluidly brutal.

This one is gonna be angry. I'm already writing down lyrical content and it's not about no beds of roses, no pleasure cruises lol

In the meantime, I'll grind that axe for a long time
