While people do use social media for different reasons, many of them wholesome and intelligent.

I completely agree with your point. It's insanity. Worse, there are increasing laws, so we're going well beyond peer pressure, here, to conform or be punished.

I used it for my band, and mostly to keep up with family or friends in other countries. I also like to cause trouble at times. I've never had any issues with ever seeing advertising. I run Adblock Plus on all the browsers on my PC. And, Facebook and Instagram are locked down with strict user controls and no allowable platform apps and advertising on my phone.
