Old Traynor / Marsland Speakers

I have a couple old AlNico speakers fro a Traynor cab. It is the top half of a YR412 cab thus an angled 2x12 cabinet. Love it for that!
It seems it is from late 60s to early 70s. I cannot find much info on the drivers other than they were likely made by Marsland or RSC and do look exactly like a Jansen P12L speaker. All it says on them is 12FVSL and DWE8 which does seem like a Marsland code for sure.
Would be neat to see anything else about them, their exact age and even power handling. Certainly large magnets! They were reconed with 16 ohm Celestion voice coils. I think they are 2" voice coil too. I should really install them again in that 2x12. I will compare to a couple other speakers.

Normally the magnet has a bell cover.
The magnet is alnico.
Jensen started manufacturing this speaker in about 1955.
The original power rating is 50 watts but for distortion (guitar speaker) you should really consider it 25 watts.
This is because distortion makes the voice coil hotter, compared to clean signals. It's a good idea to leave extra power handling margin...

So what speaker is that? Seems like a P12N. I found a P12L that is identical, has a Jensen sticker on back instead of bell cover. Looks exactly like it though other than the cober amd color too.
From 1960. Mine would be made for Traynor, or Marsland assumedly by Jensen at this stage.
I wonder if they still made that P12N in late 60s.

Actually as an edit I see a pic of one wirhout the cover and that isn't quite it. Looks more like the P12L.

That speaker is a generic shot of a Jensen . Mine is the top one. Has only 12FSVL and DWE8 on it. The DW is a Marsland code but do not know how to decipher.

There should be an EIA code on the chassis somewhere. It could be obliterated, but they’ve been coding them for decades...usually 6 or 7 digits.

Yeah all I got is what I related. Printing is clear on those but no other markings sadly. Is this even for Marslands or RSC speakers?

I haven’t found those company names on the EIA code list. That’s not unusual, as many manufacturers get their “branded” speakers from other common speaker manufacturers...like CTS, or Jensen...they may say Fender, or Traynor on the sticker, but somewhere on the chassis, or maybe the cone, you should find an EIA code somewhere...or the remnants of one.

No wor4ies. The bit of info I found claims that Marsland used their own codes. I have seen reference to a DWK8 but not the DWE.
Plus these were reconed with 16 ohm Celestion voice voils. Could well have been a white code written in original paper.
Cool big old speakers though. I need to AB them with some of my other ones.

Exactly. The Power handling is going to be married to the voice coil, not the basket/magnet assembly. And the power handling will vary for a voice coil depending on the basket/magnet assembly its put into.

Lamentably no clue. None. It was like 20 years ago amd they haven't been used much. I can still use em was just curious about their history.

Yes the magnet will affect the output. A powerful magnet, and you need a VC that will handle enough power to make it move. A heavy cone, and you need a powerful magnet and VC to control it. When you look at the VC, everything comes into play; the amount of layers of winding, the gauge of wire used, length of the VC, gap between the magnet and coil, etc. It's fun stuff man!

I just bought a crudely made cab from Hamilton Ontario with the same stamp and may have found this 6-7 digit code. as far as I have seen, only one of the woofers has the stamp on the paper cone.

There is the DWe8

and stamped on magnet is 125-18

The cab is a crudely made (on the inside mostly) 4x12 bulky cabinet that says "Bass" on the front. The back has a plate that says O.H.M. company Toronto...
Something tells me its all been staged except the stampings...the gold decals on woofers look like they were added by whoever built it, the plate on the back and bass logo on front could have been added, the real stickers on the woofers were removed...
