So I’m looking at some Epis on Reverb, and look what I find :pound-hand:

Well......guitars made in China are not so great.
The finish is fancy, but the play-ability not so hot.
Epi stock pick ups are a bad joke, in case you wondered.
I think some of the upper-tier models of epi are quite a lot better, better PUs , better tuners, etc.
So if I did, I would go for the "custom shop," and it's a bit better quality but still not up to USA levels.
The ones with Grover or Gotoh high ratio tuners, better.
The ones with Gibson PUs, better.

But comparing it side by side with something like Godin, the Godin might turn out to be a better choice.

Bought this EPI LP Ultra last year used. Not sure where it was made, the previous owner put Z90s in it. It rocks and has a neck better than my 81 LPC. $475 including a hard shell case.

That's perhaps a bit of an over generalization. It certainly holds true for some but it's not a rule that can be applied to all. I've owned flawless guitars that were made in China and that cost north of $1200 when new but I've also owned bad ones. One of the worst guitars I've owned was a 2019 Gibson, made in USA.

I try not to judge a guitar based on the country of origin though as there are more important aspects when actually playing one ;)

The deal with those moderns is the sculpted neck heel / body.
My concern is if removing that much material around the neck pocket will weaken the area too much.

My Custom Shop is a Modern Axcess series. Can't see the neck joint being weak. Excellent high fret access, thinnwr body, 490T PU, sounds n plays great!
Also, the cheaper guitars use a picture of flame maple, yes, laminated to a cheap piece on top.

That's a pretty broad general statement, and IME is not always true.

I'm sorry, but I have had absolutely horrible experience with Gibson quality in the past, so I take any statement which infers that Gibson is automatically better than brand X with a grain of salt.
