Rainbow In The Dark Solo:

Wow, talk about a workout....

We recorded a cover of this song this weekend and I cannot seem to get the solo down right. I spent yesterday really picking is apart and learning all the little nuances. This is a monster of a solo. I will post a Soundcloud link once I get it nailed down!!!!

Look forward to hearing it!!

I never play anything exactly like Vivian, but I try to remain faithful to the original composition.

Here's an excerpt of my solo on our cover Dio's 'Holy Diver.'

You can pick out the differences in my less than technical approach to Viv's arrangement:

This solo is a real beast. First of all, it's very long at a full 1:20 and it contains many super fast staccato and legato phrases. I have been working it out very slowly, trying to get all the nuances down before trying to speed it up. The original recording is at 117bpm and I have been working on the solo at around 85-90bpm with a metronome click.

Here's my progress thus far.

This is played on my Jackson San Dimas-FR through the 20 year old GFS Double-Slug Bridge Pickup (14k) into my Blackstar and then direct-out to Audacity. Reverb is from the amp.

Nice work. Thats a lot of notes to remember :dood:

I really think Robert's skill shines in a section like this. Great job Robert on the Rainbow.

Also, I think we should rename Robert's Holy Diver clip as HOLY COW!!!!! OR HOLY SHIITE

Thanks, @chilipeppermaniac ...

There's a few sections where I pick a little differently, so, in effect, I have actually simplified parts of Vivian's solo and made it easier to play...

Bro RO BERT, You git r Dun. NO one will ever play exactly like the original artist, heck not even the original artist is like a Tape of himself.
For you, for us and for your audiences, presenting an enjoyable and well played song and sets of songs, or recording sessions of songs, is the point of it all. Many of the skills you have developed show a mastery of many techniques, rhythms and licks of quite a variety of bands. Once someone attains that skill, they can carry it over into many future areas.

For example. I was watching some Dio, Viv Campbell stuff and came across Doug Aldrich and this nice clip. His messages reflect what I am saying, nicely.
