PRS 57/08 pickups

Yes, I have them on my McCarty, and I love them. Really nice high/low balance and they don't lose volume when tapped.

Really? Did you swap the pups? I thought McCarty guitars always came with McCarty pups, which is fine by me because they are my favorite.

No swap - that's how it came. I did check the spec on their web site, and it is right. It's the MC58.

So from my perspective, I like 57/08 pups, but never liked them in my PRS Studio. I was hesitant to change them because the Studio is designed with three 57/08s, two of them being the same winds and magnets, but shrunken, the so-called narrowfield (NF) pickups, in the middle and neck positions. I love the NFs and did not want to interrupt the theme...until tonight. I had a Vintage Bass squabin (pup with square bobbin). I was hesitant to put it in the bridge, but the DC resistance measured 9.04, so I went for it. I must say, it sounds and looks GREAT. This neck pup in the bridge is killer - make sure to break the rules once in a while!

All sounds reasonable. I have found their sound to be pretty sensitive to height. It's well worth nudging that up and down in half turns to see what happens.

Ah yes, a limited run, which is almost every PRS guitar except the Custom 24. Even the Custom 22 dissappeared for a while!!

Nice guitar Don! We do not see pics of that ax enough (hint).

OK, I'll play. Give me a moment

Here is the Studio with the original bridge pup. I will post a pic with the uncovered VB squabbin tomorro. It has been re-wired so that the volume is a push-pull that adds the bridge (to neck and neck/middle).

That's nice. They must have done a lot of work on the bridge because they've managed to get the intonation dead right.

Yes, I've seen that before. Can't be doing with that video though. A stock Junior with modification holes all over it? Hah! And then when he demonstrates sustain he's going through a dirty channel that is already limiting.

Yes, the machining of the bridge is nice. The installation and sound demo, not so much. John is a very nice fellow, just the same.

Wow, very nice. Do not let that go, ever! I was a dedicated PRS addict for a while and that is special. That is an "Artist" package, correct?

If you everpull a pickup, or if you still have the ID sticker from the case with the "MODCAT" on it, this chart may help. There is also a "decoder" site (link below)

PRS MODCAT Decoder

Yes I have the MODCAT sticker, and it decodes like this

For some reason it gets the bass pickup wrong.

Actually, the decoder is not wrong. If anything, the MODCAT is wrong. According to the chart, the 57/08 covered is a "K" and the 59/09 IS "9" which comports with the end of your modcat. Did you pull the pickup? Is it a special run by a store? If it is, they allow the store to select certain specs, like the pups and even the wood type (within limits).

I must tell you, of it is a 59/09, there is no reason to be concerned. It is the preference of most. In any event, I am sure you have no concerns as you already love the guitar. If you investigate further, please let me know.

No need to pull them - it's right there on the covers
