Digging the sunburst

I was never a great fan of sunburst finishes. I thought they were just common, old fashioned and boring.

Then about 3 years ago I got a beautiful sunburst Tele, and I have come to love the wood grain. Now I find myself attracted to sunburst guitars. I even went so far as to choose the sunburst model when I bought my Harley Benton SC Jr (Les Paul Jr) six months ago. I am also liking transparent colors where you can see the wood grain. Solid colors have become less desirable to me (except for sparkle finishes. I love sparkle finishes) .

Am I just getting old?

Sunburst is the luthier's craft which shows the effort, the patience the planning.
The art of revealing beauty of the wood which was carved.

Agreed with AMS: a sunburst doesnt lie, well really any visible burst. You can hide a million flaws in a solid color, especially lighter finishes, darkers can be revealing. But a Burst is brutally honest: you either get it right on the wood working or it will show every screw up you made. Thats why they are cherished

Unfortunately, photoflames and photoquilts are gaining popularity and while they look cool, they hide all the flaws beneath the skin because its a sticker basically, sprayed in clearcoat/lacquer
