So this morning a metalhead youtuber posted a challenge. The youtuber is Farvann. He does tongue in cheek tutorials on how to write various metal songs in different sub-genres. Although, he tends to focus on black metal...not my thing... its the one sub-genre i tend to steer clear of. Without getting into the lyrical content as that in and of itself would violate multiple forum rules on different levels. on a Technicality level, the whole point is to sound like
. thats not even me making fun of it. Lo-fi, crappy recordings are the name of the game in that sub genre. You can take whatever guitar and amp you want...it seriously does not matter. Dime everything out, slap on a boss MT-2 pedal and record through a crappy mic.... To put this in perspective, i recently listened to recordings i did when i was 16 years old just because of nostalgia (and no im not putting them here because i ended up cringing the entire time) and i recorded through a 10$ computer mic that was almost right up against my zoom fire-15...and i had a boss MT-2 pedal. You compare the tone and quality with my VERY early recordings to any black metal song... it's REALLY close...only thing missing is tremolo picking on my end...but i digress.
So the challenge is, he provided a drum beat...a drum beat i have yet to listen to as I'm doing this in real time, and I'm supposed to make a song using that beat, he even provided a midi file if we wanted to use our own VST's on the drums (SWEET!). So let me have a listen....
BY THE BOOK OF HEAVY METAL WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?!?!?!?!
He said it's about 150 bpm, so im thinking, "Well thats not bad, some of my songs went up to 185" noooo.... its 4 minutes of what sounds like BASSSNAREBASSNAREBASSSNARE as fast as the human body would allow somone....Where are the toms Farvann?? WHERE ARE THE TOMS?!?!?!?! You know, i should had known... typical black metal beat...although this would also apply to Deathcore too...so...Death metal it is...IF I can even do this.... And he's probably expecting a black metal tune...in the Army I learned a very important thing...if you are going to be wrong, then be wrong with conviction so at least it looks like you put effort into it, i mean you are screwed either way. So in typical me fashion...Symphonic Deathcore....
I make no promises that i can even do this...thats a whole lot of tremelo picking that im usually not accustomed to.. Now a song like this almost DEMANDS to sound sinister....so it needs a synyster name....I'll think on this while i inject myself with 1,000 cc's of pure caffeine...
