So, I have started to just dip a toe into the water of writing new music again after being pretty uninspired most of this year. Can't imaging why

So I was in a little bit of a groove yesterday, working some things up and actually recording stuff for the first time since probably March and before I knew it I'd been playing for probably 5-1/2 or 6 hours. Then at dinner last night I realized my wrist, picking hand, was quite sore. This morning I woke up and it feels almost as though it is sprained. Have not picked up a guitar today yet but worried that its going to be painful to play, and its clear that whatever this is was caused by playing so its concerning.

Really I am just sharing this info, not sure anything can be done about it other than lay off for a while but I really want to put in some more time today so that may suck.

I am not a doctor....I am familiar with pain associated with binge playing.
Ibuprofen.

Quick question: is it kinda inflamed or spongy to the touch on the wrist? Reason i ask, is it kinda sounds like Carpal Tunnel. Like Don said, ibuprofen is great for the inflammation and you can get a wrist supporter ( not a carpal tunnel brace) to help straighten and stabilize your picking hand. Try icing it for an hour and 20-30mins of heat back and forth a bit too.

No not at all, and not in that part of the wrist. Its sore in the tendons/muscles above the joint, just like a sprain. No swelling either, just sore.

Not sure if its from playing but , i have pain on my left side on my fretting hand side. When i practice i go full force at it, like in lord of the rings when army facing other army and scream chaaaaaaaargggggeee!!! :)

this photo is after practice

I never play sitting. Just never learned how to do it, am never comfortable that way.
That’s usually a good thing. It’s usually more natural to maintain proper shoulder, elbow, and wrist positioning when standing. I don’t usually run in to problems unless I’m playing for extended times while seated, and forced by the furniture in to a poor position. Strap length may need to be adjusted, slightly, in your case?

Well thats a good thing then! Maybe just a tendon strain. Id try the RICE method for a day at least ( Rest, Ice, Compression Elevation).

I think lowering the strap a touch would help. I was playing one of my Firebirds and they of course have an unusual position for the bridge relative to the body of the guitar which may have been part of it.

same here.
I may sit a bit while learning something new from youtube/ whatever, but stand 99+% of the time.

+1 on the RICE
Treat that seriously so it heals up proper.
My hands sometimes feel a little stiff when I start playing.
Lately I have been running my hands and wrists under warm / hot-ish water for a minute or so before playing.
Really helps.
Saw it on a Steve Stine video a while back.

Sitting, I opt to use the classical guitar position, puts the hand and wrist in a more natural state, but still, depending on what chords you use, up to 5 hours can start to wear on your wrists. I usually give it a few days break after long recording sessions before I pick up my guitars again.

Good idea, will try that.
