What made/inspired you to first pick up a guitar/bass?

I always love hearing stories of " my first guitar", "favorite band" etc but often I never hear of WHY someone first picks up the strings. So, post away about why you ever started down this path!

For me it was down to two things: my dad had a midlife crisis and bought a Tele and wanted to play but lacked the focus, so he tossed it to me a few months later on my 12th birthday and bought a bunch more expensive gear thinking that would fix it but it didnt lol ( i still own this same guitar today by the way!)

But i never wouldve been inspired to actually play it if it wasnt for AC/DCs Live At Donnington concert on VHS. More than anything in this world, I wanted to be as cool as Angus Young and make thunder come out of a guitar. Never gonna be that but it got me moving!

When I was a kid (7 or 8 years old)I played the sweet flute. I did It really good. Then I started study piano but It was to much teory for my taste. No practice just teory. But I play It a little. Guitar? All my live I played guitar but when I was a kid I did It just for fun. During these years I preferred to play with my small Casio organ.

I’ve been about music for quite some time. Jr. High and HS band. Listened to all types of music all the time. Pretty sure it was first time I heard Status Quo do Pictures of Matchstick Men that convinced me Rock was going to be my Genre of choice. But when it came time to buy my first guitar, it was CSN & Y that had me buying an acoustic rather than an electric. Bought a 12 string. A year later bought an Ovation because it was what Glen Campbell played. And while I did finally get a few electrics. I think acoustic is still my favorite.

Really not sure here. My dad played guitar before my time, my older brother played guitar, and my dad started messing with guitar again sometime after I did. I was into bands and if I had to name a band responcible it would be the original Alice Cooper band, which was one of my other older brothers favorite band. But, I was into music and watched pretty much anything on TV that had music on it. I think my first 'new' electric guitar was ordered from the Montgomery Wards catalog.

My older sister had lots of good rock my bro amd I listened to. KISS Alive, Alice Cooper, Boston, April Wine, etc and we bought some Cheap Trick, ACDC etc. Always wanted to play on a stage with a big show.
Watched bands come through in high school amd longed to do it. Fall of 1978 I borrowed my uncle's 1950 Supro guitar amd bought a crappy Univox Stage 65 amp. A simple KISS music book amd off to the races.

I will say today, I have played some reasonably large shpws in terms of audience size amd stage etc and I also play way better today than I even wanted to. So I did accomplish what I wanted to.

Now with the new band my next goal is to hear one of our songs on the radio!

In 1971 I bought the Paranoid album , I had been listening to GFR, CCR , Hendrix, Cream, Chicago, est.
And for no other reason wanted to be able to play like Tony Iommi, a year later, I would also throw into the mix Ritchie Blackmore.
Pops bought me and my younger brother a Teisco del ray from the local K mart the music store was the place we got the amp a very small Alamo tube amp, got signed up for lessons, and imagine my surprise when I went in for my first lesson with my guitar and amp, and the whole class of about 20 people, are all sitting there with an acoustic guitar.
Was not what I was expecting.
Needless to say I really didn’t learn much !!
Cheers
Mitch

and well ---- the world hasnt been the same ...................... Ive been completely screwed up ever since

reminds me I think a GIBSON GRABBER is on line for this evenings Musings........was playing a Firebird just moments ago.............yep-- this album left its mark for sure

I always loved music and knew the lyrics to tons of songs.
I was at a coworker's house for a party and another coworker picked up a guitar and played along with literally every song that someone threw on the CD player.
I decided then that I wanted to do that too! After all, I already knew the song lyrics!
Well, fast forward 30 years and I still suck at playing and I definitely can't sing at the same time!

Like you. Can’t play and sing at the same time. Took me years to perfect that walking and chewing gum thing..... so there may still be hope.
