Deep Purple Live (1974) in front of 400,000 @ California Jam

DP was the ultimate rock band. I prefer the Mark 2 lineup with Gillan, Paice, Glover, Lord, and Blackmore.

I never saw them. But, from watching videos, especially from the early days, it seems like it was less of a concert and more of an experience.

Me too! And their 1972 Machine Head album was near Rock 'n Roll perfection in it's entirety song after song that still holds its own today as it sounds practically timeless & could have been written yesterday! That literally is just over 45 years ago as it was released in March of '72! Amazing eh?

That is immortal Rock 'n Roll bruddah!

Here's a rare Mk II personnel video of the 1972 Copenhagen show put to the Live From Japan recording of Highway Star.

Agree totally.

There are some gems there that don't get a lot of attention. "Pictures of Home" is a pretty intriguing song, and "Lazy" is just a ton of fun!

One of my favorite clips of Ritche being a hot dog (literally.) Watch when he blows up one of his Marshall stacks, you can see his hair igniting .

One of favorite Deep Purple tunes is Black Knight which was a MK II hit that put Deep Purple on the map & set them apart from other musicians of the day. What a jammin turn-around riff & ingeniously syncopated drum parts! Rock 'n Roll in 1969/1970 was groundbreaking & becoming unpredictable.

Here's footage of DP playing Black knight in 1970 on BBC's TOTP show. Great footage but the live audio is overdubbed & I can not find the original soundtrack to the footage despite looking at numerous Youtube clips. Still the music sounds smokin & the footage is crazy cool to look at, so enjoy.

Here's a Live vid from Copenhagen in '72. A bit fast but the scene is very retro cool.

Me too.
My favorite Ritchie thing ever is the solo in Kentucky Woman.
Although I have to say I like Steve Morse in the lineup as well.
He's just as good as Ritchie and actually looks like he's having
a good time up there instead of scowling and brooding and
looking like he'd rather be someplace else. I don't like that.

Quite a show...but for a poor kid who used to turn in pop bottles to buy strings, I treat all my guitars as precious....

WTF did they do to get this to blow up like that!??

You can just make out the amp cabinet light up for a second before the accellerant they used catches & explodes.

The ensuing flash seems way bigger than anyone probably thought they were gonna get!
(Below) Ritchie disappears in a flash!

Ritchie finally shows reaction to the large flash & probably the heat he felt as well & starts to move away.

Feeling the HEAT! Richie flits away to safety like a ballerina.

Within literally a second or two after Richie's ''échappé sauté" the area where he was standing is in actual flames!

The fire extinguishers already precisely placed & activated right on the fire within a second of 'Flame On' tells me this was stupidly & recklessly planned with some highly flammable accellerant that most likely wouldn't be allowed on today's stages due to the extreme danger!

Rock 'n Roll, excitement & danger went hand in hand in the late 60's / early 70's baby!

Here's a cool video of Lazy.

What is so unique about this that you don't feel like you're watching a band play a song as much as you feel like the band is just using the song to take you on a musical journey.

Wow that was great! Now keep that 'musical journey' going & check out 'Child in Time'. This one is a real trip & Ritche cranks a Gibson humbuckered 335 through those JMP Marshalls for a change!

Hey gutz. Here's a rare one from 69! This has elements of 'Lazy' in but I believe it is called ''Hard Road (Wring that Neck)".

Once again Ritchie is on the Gibson 335 which actually was his main guitar until seeing Hendrix in 1970 & hunting down a Strat!

Anyway, Ritchie is absolutely smoking the frets of his Gibson 335 doing some very fast, accurate & at times chromatic lead work which gives way to some outrageous Jon Lord Keyboard stuff.

Strange audio mix but Ritchie's playing is clear as day.

Hey, who thinks Ritchie sounded better on a Gibson 335 vs his Strat tone??

Here's that very cool vid of 'Wring that Neck' from '69.
Enjoy

Child In Time is one o' my favs. Yes, I like his work on the 335. I have this version on my mp3 player and often listen to it with earphones when I go to bed.
