Fender Blues Jr. amp...

I'm not sure this is the proper place for an amp thread. Is there an amp section? If there is, I humbly ask the mods to move the thread!

So. I've been a Fender amp player for quite some time, and recently decided that my back was a bit too old for carrying heavy gear around. Our band has been on the road for a handful of years now, we play around quite a lot, but exactly because we hit the road often, we not always have our roadies available.

I sold my bigger amp and bought a brand new Fender Blues Jr. Ltd Edition, I mean the one covered in tweed and with the Jensen C12N speaker.

Man, what a great little big amp! 15 watts of pure road worthy power and clarity. I am loving it.

I tell you, you'll find plenty of threads in guitar forums either praising this amp for its virtues, or bashing on it for not being... a vintage Champ or Princeton. Which it was never meant to be, in the first place.

You will see lots of idiots talking trash about it, simply because they ignore the fact that it's a 90s amp designed for 90s music: it has a solid state rectifier, which is actually good for some styles of guitarists ( the SAG discussion is endless and pointless, each amp gives you what it gives you), but it's all tube regarding power/preamp, single channel amp, volume delivers the dirt you need. Just as I like it. It has vintage and modern qualities that make it perfect for travelling live players like me.

My own abridged review: It's a very road worthy small amp, and VERY loud for its portable and lightweight size. Plus, this model screams "FENDER!" even louder due to the Jensen C12N speaker, one of the early Fender classic speakers to begin with. Of course I like Celestions but with Fender amps... hmmm no. Jensen rocks.

As soon as I got it, I custom ordered a road case for it and took it to rehearsals... Can't wait to gig with it in November:

I'm very happy with what I'm doing with this, plus a Fulltone Octafuzz (which I use just for seasoning the amp's own overdrive with some fuzzy dirt, I never use the octaver function) and a lot of elbow grease, I mean hand work. Guitar playing. Fretting and picking instead of a whole lotta effects.

No wonder lots of artists like Drew Dixon are gigging with this amp and rocking stadiums with it!

Oh and I forgot to mention: when I bought it I was afraid of the comments I had read about its reverb being less than ok.

Pure Bullshit. It has a small reverb tank, but it's a Church sounding Fender spring reverb that I can't complain about, no matter how thoughly I tried to detect flaws.

There's drawbacks to it.
For example Fender uses really cheap flimsy pots to build "junior" amplifiers. The Jr. amps are not really made to be very roadworthy or long-lasting.

But on the other hand
with some upgrades or modifications BJ is a pretty good amp.
I know some players who gig with them.

I successfully installed a "kitchen sink" Fromel upgrade kit into my friend's Hot Rod Deluxe. Very well thought out and simple upgrades if you don't mind doing some soldering.

Fromel is pretty good. There is a lot of soldering to install all the parts.

I think there is a Bourns pro audio pot that you can retrofit in place of the stock controls...

While I agree on most of the Hot Rod series being kind of a cheap series, people exaggerate a bit. The Blues Jr certainly has some cost cutting to it, but they're definitely players' amps. I talked to many owners, including artists, and they were quite positive in their replies.

I myself am very pleased with what I got for the money. I can't say anything about the "standard" black tolex BJ, but this edition with the Jensen speaker sounds very nice for blues and classic rock, and has more than enough headroom for gigs, I don't even mic it in smaller venues.

As for the custom and upgrading mods: sure, why not? If I get a faulty pot I sure will replace it. Otherwise I am pretty satisfied. No wonder people have been playing around through Hot Rod amps since the 90s.

I especially like the tone this fellow gets from his Blues Jr. He takes it everywhere. I got interested in buying one in the first place because of his tone.

Once your tube board fails: Complete Fender Blues Junior FBJ Tube Valve PCB Board with Bias Test Points | eBay

The mods I've done on mine are replacing the tube board with that (the bias pot version) and removing the bright cap. Someone else had already changed the speaker to an Eminence Cannabis Rex, but I mostly play through a Celestion Greenback impulse response anyway...

I agree that the reverb on the BJr isn't that bad. There are plenty of worse ones around.

Now that's something worth buying as a repair kit. Thanks a lot.

I haven't felt the need to mod anything so far. The tone is very cool.

The "there are worse around" is what I really don't understand. The reverb on mine is good, with all 4 letters. I have been gigging with Fender and Marshall amps for years now and sincerely I couldn't spot a downside in it so far.

My band mates are all skilled musicians, more than me, btw, and they just loved the amp.

I suspect that people who talk about this amp out there fetishize too much and listen too little.
