What Should I Expect?

Congrats man. I’m guessing you’ll be just fine. Keep us tuned in how it goes. Personally. I’ve been punching the clock since 1972. A few different places, but I’m pooped. I don’t have the date picked out yet, but it’ll be before the end of the year I hang up the time card for the last time. And boy. Am I ready.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I'm assuming that there are some retired folks here. I'm retiring in 8 days (I'm not counting) after 44 years with the same company. I would like to know what it felt like on your first day and/or week not punching the clock. Was it joyful relief? Was it depressing? Was it a huge culture shock? I really would like to know what's coming.

Good luck with retirement , take it day by day and enjoy time off work you worked long enough.

Im not retired ive got long way to go and i think by the time my retirement come i think there will be no retirement if by then new virus no wipe us out.

I forgot it is comjng up so soon!! Awesome Far!
My case was a bit different, I had 25 years jn photo retail, 25 Christmases in that zoo amd just needed a mental break. I quit at 49 amd just woumd up not going back. The wife had her surgery and she is retired now too.
You want to make sure you have thjngs to do, I mean, it sounds like you do work yer butt off and you don't want to get bored. But it beats punching the clock.

My Dad went from being a well respected pharmacist who answered evryone's questions to selling his store and retiring without a plan. So he suddenly was a nobody, so to speak. Really screwed him up.
Me, I can hang and do nothing easily enough so I really didn't need a big plan.

You'll do great man!

Said goodbye via Zoom. Dropped of my keys, badge, laptop, USB drives, leg shackle and muzzle.
Life has been much better for me without the burdens of a real job.
I wasn't retirement age yet, which was even better. I had time to be me.
That was 10 years ago, and I have zero regrets.
I still get up early, best part of the day.
Walk for an hour with the dog around 7:00, and never have to stress over other peoples problems anymore...
I chat with pops for a while every day, and goof off till the wife finds me something to do.
I can lunch or meet up with friends at a moments notice now, not having to coordinate schedules, makes for easier planning.

Congrats on the big step, and the best to you.

Was it joyful relief?
Oh Hell yes!

Was it depressing?
Only when I talk to my buddies that are still busting their azz... poor bastards!

Was it a huge culture shock?
I went from sleeping less than 6 hours a night to sleeping 8 hours on the average. I really do stop and smell the Rose's. I have found that birds are really interesting. I now have a hard time remembering what day it is... no dementia involved yet! I feel like a 10 year old on an endless summer break... :woohoo:

Congrats on your upcoming retirement...

I have to look at my phone to remember what day it is:io:. We go thru 4 cups of nectar (sugar water) a day in 2 hummingbird feeders.

@Far Rider just checking in. How are things now since retirement?
To say that I am absolutely loving it would be an huge, nay MASSIVE, understatement. I have been enjoying every minute. Don't miss the "customer interactions" one tiny bit. My wife said either I was going to retire or she would find a way to get me fired. I'm much calmer now without all the stress. I've lost 10 lbs, built my dream amp and working on another. Get to spend much more time with the wife and kitties. Blood pressure is down and I got off my anti-anxiety meds. I'm truly blessed and thankful. The guys at work have burned an effigy of me. :p
