New speaker day, DST

Today seems to be the day for stuff to arrive after a few months of waiting. Got my 2001 A Space Rock Odyssey compilation from Germany. And, Jeff texted me that my 2 x 12 that I ordered was done.

I should have done this years ago, as my DST Engineering U84 TNT head is no longer the same color as my nice new cab. Maybe, someday, they look the same.

It’s got two Celestion Anniversary Series 8 Ohm 30 watt speakers in it. They came out of my DST30 after scoring some early sixties Goodmans Audiom 60 speakers.

I’ll wind it up in a little while, and let you know how it sounds.

Now plug in Boss metal zone in front and gain it all the way..... just kidding , looks sweet my brother look forward to hear how it sounds.

... my DST Engineering U84 TNT head...
Kind of a bummer that DST is not around making amps anymore. Without even have tried any of their amps (and chances are that I never will!), I'm pretty sure those are some badazz amps that I would have all kinds of fun with.

On your TNT: The Output mini switch in the middle, LO/HI... What does it exactly do?

Yeah, you would not believe how many people are bummed that Bob retired. I completely agree with why he retired, and it wouldn’t be my place to say otherwise anyway.

All of Bob’s designs were pretty cool, as he would take the best of a couple of different circuits and mash them up. Hiwatt and Marshall to make the Marwatt, and the best of Ampeg and Fender to make another line. Then there were many other fine tuned copies of classics, such as my DST30 with EF86 preamp Tube circuit.

This little UV84 has two EL84 output tubes and a pair of 12ax7s in it. When the 2 and 8 watt craze was all the rage, these weren’t cheap. I got it when Bob was cleaning his cellar, and it was a demo amp. The output lo/hi switch sounds a bit like when you give an Ampeg treble knob that extra click, and it gets brighter.

I’m supposed to get a Saturday with Bob, and he’ll teach me some of what’s going inside of the amps. Hopefully that happens someday. We both joke about it. We’re almost neighbors, but haven’t seen each other in ages.

Flying V straight in, no pedals. Sounds sweet. Much better than the old Sovtek cab I used to use with this amp.

Like a Bright switch?

On an old Ampeg, it’s the asterisk on the treble knob. Knob goes to 10, then you turn CW, and click it to 11. It gives it that little extra bit of nasty.

What Ampeg model is that? I want to find a schematic and see what's going on with that treble pot. It's gotta be activating a small valued cap...

That Ampeg's tolex is pretty cool too. My AA Chihuahua has that same style of tolex too:

Just dropped off the box for the U84 head with Jeff. He’s going to recover it, so that it matches the speaker.

I also worked out a deal for the last known DST Engineering amplifier and cabinet that would have been available for sale by either Bob or Jeff. More info to come in two weeks. Jeff needs to clean them up for me first.

Awesome looking rig!!!!!!!

Stopped by Jeff Swanson’s after work today, and grabbed the box for my DST U84TNT head. I think it looks fantastic now that it matches the cabinet that he made me.

Also picked up the U34-CL and matching 4x12 cabinet while I was there. More about those later.
