WGS Retro 30 and Reaper 30

I have a 50 watt, WGS Reaper 55Hz. Custom build by Vern Skow, IIRC. Good speaker, but i was surprised that it didn't handle high vume, high gain with high bass and resonance settings better than it did...
Hmmm

I'm using mine with a 20 watt amp?

OP might want to take that into account, never have used them with a particularly higher wattage amp.

As usual, buyer beware!

No complaints, just an observation. When we performed "You've Got Another Thing Comin," the 55Hz Reaper did not like my high gain/high resonance settings during the palm-mutex F# passages. The speaker was "flubbing" and i had to drop my bass frequencies down a lot to restore the crispness.

Definitely "food" for thought.

Not a big fan of the flubbing phenomenon.

I do tend to use a boost with my Marshalls, wonder if it's acting as a high pass?

Better go check it out! Hope it's not too early for the "normies" Lol.

I don’t know about using the 50watt 55hZ version as a solo/lone speaker...but in the mix; a standard 30watt Reaper, and 30watt Reaper 55hZ, over 4 Vintage 30 speakers....they seem to fare well at ludicrous levels here...mine don’t flub out...but mine are old now, and really well broken in. Once in a while, I use them to shake the dust from the ceiling around here...with either the Dual Rec, or the old 50 watt Laney. Loud enough to make my drummer complain ;) that he can’t hear himself playing.

The 2x12 is only rated at 60watts power handling, so I’ll only run it with my smaller tube heads if I’m using it alone. I’m kinda surprised that I’ve never floored the Laney through it alone, but maybe I’ll change that soon.
The 2x12 is a convertible cab....either sealed, or half open back. Currently I’m running it half open.

Well, with Ultra Gain volume at approaching 8 or 9, I can surmise that Reaper is like trying to beat John Force while you are driving a Yugo.

As I was typing this, I thought, Robert and I are backwards in Amps. Other than the heavy weight of mine. ( Robert's sore Back)
MY Fender Red Knob Twin is 100 watts into 2x12's and I seriously doubt they get flubby.

I even laugh at the Fender OwnerManual. Check out what it says as the last thing on the last page-----

I even laugh at the Fender Operators Instructions where it says " Sound" Very Loud

My hip, actually...but pain radiates into lower back and down right leg during a flare up. I had a partial separation of the SI joint (butterfly looking pelvic bones) during a SWAT training excercise in 2003.

I have to be really careful. Pushing cars, Kickstarting bikes and cartying heavy things off to one side can sideline me for days...

I own both of the Reaper versions.

Very happy with WGS Reaper's, and if you can find one of the discontinued models @Thatbastarddon mentions I would recommend.

Use them with my Marshall's, and play the typical Classic to Heavier metal rock.

People used to buy WGS based on price, but those are my faves regardless.

Have fun.
I read on their site that they love Retros and i like my Reaper 30's so now i'm gonna have both. Celestion isn't the only speaker company that makes good speakers!

I got my Retros in! What a great tone for modern metal! It lacks nothing whether it's bass, mids or highs. I think it may do 80' s metal better with Green Beret's / Reaper 30w since the BG seems less low middy. Anyway, the Retros sound better in the top since they're a tad bassier than the Reapers and i don't like boominess. Pretty safe to say, my speaker search is over!

Great news!!!

I bought so many speakers looking for the right ones....lost a ton of dough on them.
