Neodymium Magnet Speakers:

Ok,

I didn't announce the swap to my band mates, I just set up and we started playing. After the first song, I was asked, "Is that a new amp? It sounds totally different from last week." Then, one of the guys wanted to play through it and it gave me the opportunity to walk around in the room while someone else was playing through my rig. All around, the amp sounds more articulate and crunchy passages are much more defined. The Electro-Harmonix 12VR75 was a great speaker for metal, but in this new band, where we perform and eclectic mix of Bryan Adams, Fleetwood Mac, Go-Go's, etc., I appreciate the added clarity and versatility in my tone.

I'm shocked, quite honestly and $152.00 is cheap for a quality speaker, IMHO...

Good to know that the Jensen neo is a quality speaker, as it should be at that price. Do you know if this speaker's response will change a bit after a break-in period?

That's a good question, and I think it certainly must. However, this is the first speaker I have bought that sounded good the minute I put it in the cabinet....

The Jensen Jet Tornado 100 watt is the direction i think i am going to go.
I own the 10-inch version. Warm and very nice clean yet bluesy sound with a 7enderish or hiwattish amp, at least also with moderate distortion. Deep lows, but a bit "unclear" (with a bass or deep baritone guitar). maybe it is better running them through a high pass filter. better also means protecting them.

Let me compare them with the eminence beta-10 and delta-12: the latter sound better with the bass while You can play guitar through them reasonably well while the Jensen sounds better with the guitar.

Overall a very nice speaker.

Interesting!!!!

I am very happy with the "lows" on my personal rig. I do a lot of F# power chord "chugging" and the Celestion G12H just becomes totally unstable once you crank up the 'resonance' and bass response. Same with most of the other popular 12" speakers I tried in my Marshall DSL40C.

This Jensen will "chug" with complete articulation and definition, something not even my custom-made WGS Reaper HP 55Hz speaker delivers. The tone I am speaking of is very similar to Zakk Wylde's rhythm tone in "No More Tears." (and we know Zakk favors Electro-Voice for their resistance to break up)

I haven't found ANY Celestion or Eminence that can deliver that kind of articulation when being hit that hard...

Randy Rhoad's described the Celstions in a manner consistent with my experiences with them:

“I had to change the speakers over to Altec's (Altec Lansing 417 8-Hs, rated at 100 watts) because they’re a very bright, clean speaker. The Celestion's are really dirty anyway, and if you start adding a fuzzbox [the D+] to them, it’ll sound terrible. I like that added treble and dirt to it...."

Vintage 30s sound pretty awful until broken in. I nearly swapped them out of my Orange PPC412. And then I asked on a forum and people said I needed to crank the volume more to break them in. Maybe five hours of that and they improved a LOT

One of two Creambacks has arrived, waiting on the other one to turn up. The big dilemma is which of the four Vintage 30s to remove and which to leave in. I'd like a way to test them first to make sure I am keeping the two nicest ones.

My amp settings from tonight's performance....so much punch, but absolute clarity.

This speaker allows me to dial up a fat, thick, bass-heavy tone, without ever getting muddy. (volume is always on '10' and I control it with a volume pedal in the FX loop)

High efficiency speakers are definitely great if maximum volume is the goal. A low efficient speaker (97 dB's) does not mean it's an inferior speaker.
indeed.
The sound characteristics must match the music.
And Jensen (=Sica) is an experienced manufacturer form Italy. Technically these speakers are really ok and (musically) really well renowed - but of course they must match the musical expectations. And that cannot be found out other than by trying them.

Oh, not metal anymore, but good old blues rock? That's the terrain where they really shine (the 10" as well) - and i would have been a lot less hesitating in my expressed optinion.

You might even try them out in a fully closed or even vented cab ...

Capt Crunch ? :)

Loud mostly....

First of all, those truly are some cranked-amp settings... :dood:

Second: This thread is officially causing some speaker GAS... :run:

I do have to turn it down a little for certain songs, but this is my general live tone. I leave the amp cranked, but modulate the volume with a pedal in the FX loop, so even turned down, I lose zero gain and presence.

WARNING: HIGH VOLUME LEVEL - BE CAREFUL WITH PLAYBACK VOLUME!!!!
