Grabber is one thing, Ripper is much Cheesier.
Ripper is the Fondue Fountain of bass guitars.
Grabber is only a laughing cow compared to the great Fonduweenie.

he played both Rippers and Grabbers back in the day -- but not long after they hit it big then he started getting Custom "Punishers" and "axe" basses made

I owned a Ripper ('78) in the 80s and a G3('84) in the 90s. Comitted the ultimate blasphemy on the G3 by replacing the stock pickguard and pups with a custom cut guard and lace sensor jazz bass pups, 2 vol 1 tone. wish I hadn't got rid of that one...
