Another Well Hung Customer!

Well...when @Sp8ctre posted about his new strap he had made by the way-cool-freud @TVvoodoo , I recognized, and remembered him and his work from that LP place... I figured it was about time I tried something new, so I took the plunge. Brad was fantastic to deal with, and his packing skills are top shelf. Not only did he send me a way cool strap(Kal Drago IIRC), BUT he also sent a bunch of case candy too...schwag! Including some cheesy poofs!(unless that was an accident, and you just dropped part of your lunch in there, then I’m sorry Brad, but I found your cheesy poofs!)
Up close and personal, this strap looks and feels great...no adjustments necessary for use with my V!

Maybe Eric Clapton was Well Hung and HAD a Turtle too, when someone named him SLOWHAND, PS great looking strap DOn

Hack, HOW did the Levys damage your PRS?
It was an ugly situation...
My bro in law got me this fancy western looking strap, with these metal buckles and metal tip on the strap for Christmas one year.
It weighed a couple of pounds with all the fancy crap on it.
Looked like this, but was a two tone padded strap body....

Well, I kept it in the case with the guitar, and as I was taking it out of the accessory compartment, I dropped it and fell right on the face of my Custom 22.
Now had it been any other strap, without all that hardware, it would have been a non issue.
The fact that I dropped it, had no bearing. In my mind it was all the straps fault.
That big ol' buckle hit the top with the most sickening sound that I've ever heard.
A combination of metallic klink and solid maple klunk.
After my anger had subsided and with disgust still weighing heavily on me, I took the strap apart at the buckle, and after tossing the offending section with buckle and metal strap end in a drawer, never to be seen again, I cut a "keyhole" in what was now the new end of the strap for the strap button to go thru and have been using it that way for the last twenty years.

But it still pisses me off....

Straps, Man...

My first guitar was a 1959 Sears Silvertone (Danelectro U-1) that Dad bought for Mom in 1961. I used this guitar all through the early 1980's by fitting it with a Duncan Quarter Pounder. It came with a silk embroidered suede/leather-backed strap. Here's a photo of the guitar after I restored it for Mom's birthday in 2011. The original strap that came with the guitar in 1961 is shown attached:

In 1980, I went down to Carroll's Boot Shop in Porterville, California. Mr. Carroll did a lot of saddle and harness work for the local ranchers.
I told him I wanted to make a guitar strap and he sold me a long piece of heavy leather, 2-5/8" wide. I paid $7.50 for the strap and a bottle of leather dye.

When I got home, I used two empty .38 caliber cartridge cases to punch the holes. I dyed it black on both sides and put i on my 1959 Silvertone, which I had vandalized with
stripes and Asian characters to try and look cool:

Since 1980, I have used the same strap on all of my Strat-style guitars.

A well made strap will pass the test of time...even if a poor kid from a chicken ranch made it.

^^^^ Great stories and pics fantastic adds to this thread- You know.... I truly to love to hear about everybody's "Strapping Journey." Except the bad news about clunky hardware dinging up guitars - don't like to hear that, of course - but now you got a relic tale to tell, and that's 200% better than saying "I chipped away at it with a screwdriver then rubbed it with dirty coffee filters to make it look old." Really... twern't the fault of the strap Mr. butterfingers , and you should gotta know there seems to be a LOT of players out there that crave hardware, medium, heavy or light on theys strappages, for the lookin' cool factor, or whatever - I do try to offer a up variety. There are a few places I won't go though. Won't make a strap less than 2" wide on the shoulder, and resist making anything less than 2.5" for support. If I do, I won't be badging it as my own. I also resist making straps that don't have padding, lining and stitching, but do from time to time, and cringe a little bit when I box 'em. I also RARELY make a plain black strap. They are versatile and ubiquitous, but man they just plain bore me to death, making them, photographing them, boxing them. Plenty of plain black straps from many other sources, or like Robert above, just make your own.
