Jaco.

I know what you mean. There's so much potential in a fretless bass, and half the time I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Unfortunately, I'm hopelessly addicted to the blasted thing, so I guess the thing to do is keep plugging away at it. There ain't a thing wrong in being a Yankee transplant- I was transplanted to Alabama for about eight years and sometimes wish I was back there.

The first time I heard him, then saw that pic of him with the Fender that he pulled the frets off.

Wow.

Then his opening track on his rookie album, who does a Mingus solo? Jaco did.

It's truly a shame no one could help him with his illness.

Don't get me started on the bouncer, that eye witness' said beat him even when he was on the ground. As far as I know, never had to answer for killing a sick man.

So very, very sad.

Decatur. But I pretty much inhabited everywhere from Birmingham to Nashville. Major pawnshop crawler. I did make a pilgrimage to Florida in 93. Panama City! My sinuses LOVE Florida!

I lived in Bonifay Fl (just North of Panama City) for a year as well.

Decatur is nice -- Alabama is interesting --
Gulf Shores has lovely beaches--- Birmingham has "foothill" Mountains --

ANd Muscle Shoals has MUSIC :)

Florida has produced more than its share of great music and musicians! You are living in an awesome state for music! I'm a little envious.

The best ever?

I think so, no offense to other bassists, just a whole different universe is where that dude played.

Jaco was a great musician to be sure. However there might be other bassist to consider in the league of best ever. One of my all time favorite bass players is Stanley Clarke. Here is the album I grew up with as a teenage bassist.

I did think of Mr. Clarke, right after I hit reply.

A strong argument to be made for him as well.

I do consider Jaco as more of a raw talent, due to his various "issues", it's too bad the cure for his bi-polar disorder killed his creative spark.

I guess I just am a Jaco guy. Lol.

As an aside, saw Stanley Clarke when he toured with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood with the New Barbarians. Awesome musician in his own right to be sure.

Stanley Clarke is definitely a legend who has paid his dues many times over. I love his style as much as Jaco's and believe there is much to be learned from both. There's a couple of guys on YouTube that I have been listening to that are pretty amazing in their own rights- Adam Ben Ezra and Damian Coccio. Check 'em out, you won't be disappointed.

I'll be damned if that didn't bring a huge smile to my face.

It's so cool to see that, he's even got the faces and head bops down! Here's to the young folks, there is definitely hope for the future!

Thanks for that post, made my morning.

guitar rock (or jazz) is not dying as some claim ----period.

Jaco to me is the bass equivalent of Zappa ---pushing boundaries and charting new waters...with an individual style and groove.
