Almost Lost My Thumb!

I was polishing this big Bowie knife on my buffing wheel and it got grabbed up and whipped around and then it bit me. I looked down and there was a hunk of meat missing, but no blood...them the blood came running out. I rinsed it off and put a bandaid on...

Guess I better be careful if I want to keep playing guitar!!!

This is my thumb 4 days later...

Bad luck man, know your pain.
I did similar with a circular saw. I pulled the photos to post and then saw JohnnyGoo's comment on not looking and held back.

Gloves can drag your whole hand in and tear it up...you have a much better chance of pulling away with a minor injury without...

Thumbnails to protect those not so keen to see.

When the circular saw hit my thumb I had no time or control to pull away
BUT
had I been using gloves I have no doubt the saw would have taken my hand off.

First, one at hospital
Second, a day or so later in for a redressing
Third, almost healed.

Gloves are definitely a no no around grinders and buffers. My welding instructor drilled us on that when sharpening tungstens for tig welding.

I recall that --- you done a good job NOT losing the thumb ....

How would you have held a Fender then????? (or worse a Handlebar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) or a Pint ?!?!?!?!?!?!

VERY LUCKY !!! ;)

Yep, both sp8ctre and gasket got off easy.
Both had a wake up call.

True...you do something routinely for such a long time when one gets away you start thinking...what COULD have happened...

That reminds me of my lawnmower blade accident. Lawnmower...? Yeah right? wth? Do tell you say???

I just finished taking the blades off the lawnmower deck & putting a nice sharp fresh edge on them & then proceeding to put them back on the lawnmower. I had everything snugged up nice 'n finger tight & just had to tighten the bolts down that hold the blades in place... all that needed was that one good final ratchet turn using some muscle to insure things don't let loose.

So.. I give that wrench one last forceful pull with a good amount of muscle behind it & the damn socket twists off the bolt! The wrench goes flying & my hand goes right into that freshly sharpened blade! OWww!! Mutha fvk'r!! OWWWahh!! Right across my two left hand playing fingers & down to the bone!

Lucky me, everything healed pretty good, not perfect but good enough. plus I can play like it never happened so..

As long as the spark plug was removed (mower cant accidentally start) that's a job when gloves probably would have helped.
Glad you have no serious ongoing problem.
After a lifetime of mechanical work I have some loss of feeling in my left thumb and serious loss of feeling in my right index finger.
Could have been a lot worse.

Been there, Barry!!! Even watched my cousin cut the top joint off a finger once, removing a stick from the mower without turning it off...
