A 2018 Gibson SG Junior:

To be fair, I know this guitar (it's mine... I bought it new then sold it to a work colleague who hasn't much used it). It is perfect. I love nitro. It has beautiful wood. The pickup sounds great.

But, I have an SG Special already which isn't a million miles away.

I love the colour, I could do with a humbucker neck guitar, the best tuners ever made, I love the bridge, love the maple neck.

Not sure about the jumbo frets, the neck comfort or the plastic finish...


Both are excellent guitars.

I only have one guitar now, I quite fancy a second one... which would you recommend?
 
I voted ya cant go wrong with either.BUT, average Joe Blow can build a Telecaster .There like working on a 1952 Chevy Pickup, simple. Now average Joe Blow aint gonna be makin no Gibson SG JR. You got to remember there was a time not long ago Gibson stopped making the SG JR and you had to buy used or vintage ones. Get yours back. Rock out.then in your spare time order a bunch of Tele parts and build the damn thing. There ive said it hahahhaha

Yeah, the tele is nice, and variety too; your comments make perfect sense BRV (maybe I should get a strat with gold hardware in your honor! :) ).

I really like both.
 
When i switched from bass to guitar SG with Alnico 2's will always be what i identify with as my main tone. But, the tele is such a great guitar also..been doing a bunch of noodling into the Supro BK2 & tele's seem to coax chordal work out pretty easy. Like the way a tele is precise also when finding edge of breakup. The 2 together is fantastic in a mix.

LP-Strat-SG-Tele-Semi-acuostic if you do work in music or record a bunch, kinda need em all..not one is better..they all good
 
Here's my take on the matter.

Tele = Practically shapeless slab body. No contours. A tool, nothing more. But in the right hands it's capable of amazing things.

SG = Shapely curvaceous body with beautiful contours. Playable art. Makes you feel warm & fuzzy, just looking at it. P90 snarl & growl.

Mr. Grumpy, you sir have a tough choice to make.

My last tele (my second, I had an expensive double humbucker custom creme binding black gloss tele many many years ago which I've never seen the likes of since...) was a MIJ CAR custom which I thought would be amazing, but wasn't... I always love the idea of a tele while never having yet experienced the majesty...

Buy the SG, and start collecting bits & pieces for the Tele.
I'd be glad to donate a Fender branded Tele bridge and a set of compensated saddles that were donated to me.;)

you can buy brand new real fender olympic white Tele bodys from the Stratosphere for like 250$ in the packaging.Necks well you can go big or small money on those. 21 fret ? 22 ? i like the 21 fret model,who needs all those extra frets anyhow. I agree with ya Grump ,the Fender vintage style tuners are my favorite over all. All my Fender guitars have them.And Skunk stripped necks.
 
I would definitely buy the Tele, I don't have one, and could use one, It would be a nice addition for doing some songs that I do . I really like the Fender, but probably would go with a Godin, they have a slimmer neck which I like and an ergonomic neck as well for comfortability. And nice curve in back of guitar for comfort.

Regarding building a tele, in order to do it on the cheap, some work is required. If you are going to get a neck with perfect fretwork, and a body in which the neck pocket is perfect for said neck, both free of imperfections, that will be costly. Just check the Warmoth website, which has high quality parts high prices to match. Beyond that, you will be required to select parts that fit precisely (bridge, tuners) or make adjustments, such as doweling and drilling, etc.

Past experience has taught me that you are quite particular about your guitars. Also, I was not under the impression that you enjoyed this type of work. Finally, you need a stock of tools in addition to parts.

I do not say this to put you off the idea as much as to fully prepare you for the process. Unless you buy quality parts that were intended to go together from the beginning, you will need more than just a screw driver to do this cost effectively.
 
i buy the Fender or Fender licenced necks and have never had a problem. I dont buy the China necks. i dont buy flame maple or a vintage 68 Telelcaster neck for 5 grand.i buy Fender bodies ,although my partscaster Stratocaster body was a out fit off ebay and it was perfect. Ya in a way Ray is correct,to not have to put a bunch of work into the project stice with real Fender or All parts licenced, B Hefner, Musikraft, Stratosphere ect. Warmoth ? Awesome but $$$$$$$. To build a nice Tele with decent good parts ur lookin at 600$ to 1000$ .
 
My whole point of comenting on this poll is you can buy a damn Telecaster ANYTIME.You might not be able to buy that JR back one these days. Gibson might just pull the plug on the manufacture of the JR. I love both and i have both but i still stick by ,Buy the JR.
