The illusion

With so much time to goof off and make things, I set out to make a new toy for myself.
I started by roughing out a neck pocket in a chunk of cedar.

Then I located where the bridge would be.

And went to town with the router for a vibrato bridge, I hate the term "trem" for a bridge.

Remember that neck pocket? It got fitted with a neck.

So is anyone wondering, why would this Hackmaster clown want to make a rectangle shaped guitar with a vibrato bridge?
Well It was going to be a cigar box guitar. Not really a cigar box guitar, but have the illusion of being a cigar box guitar.
To pull off this facade I needed a donor cigar box. I removed the label and the bottom for reuse.

Now I had to do some creative routing to get a pickup, jack, and volume pot in this thing.
I fit it all together, then a little color and detail was in order. Connect a few wires and...

Remember that cigar box bottom that I harvested from the donor box?
It came in handy to hide all the rear route junk.

If I ever do another one, I'll do a few things differently, but it turned out well for a whim.

Freak'n cool, man...

Well friends, I'm sorry to say this illusion was a failure.:(
Couldn't hold a tune for any length of time.
But with disappointment comes knowledge.
Found the whole bridge had moved almost 1/8" closer to the neck in a couple of days.
String & spring tension had taken its toll. The screws had leaned that far forward in the cedar.
Tried to reinforce and straighten the holes, but the lean had compressed the wood to the point of knowing it was time to abort the mission.
Obviously this hunk of cedar was a poor choice for this project.
Way too soft.
That sucks, because it really sounded good for the few short times it was in tune, and I still have a bunch of it.
For a hardtail project with a Tele like bridge, I think the cedar would be fine, but not for this.

On to the next project...

Another fine job Mr Hackmaster, very well done. I think Bo would approve

Edit:
I just read of the failure, now I'm sad too. Cheers

When I first saw this picture I was like wow he's got 3 hands and a double neck.... o_O
I did a double neck a while back. But still have only two hands.
DSC08389.JPG
Four pairs of strings in octaves with chromatic fretting on the top neck. Three pairs in octaves with diatonic fretting on the bottom neck.
Undersaddle rod piezo pickups. I sold it at a music fair.

Not sure if Junior Brown would approve, but the dog liked it.
