I ruined my amp . . . Sorta

Well I have been playing my Princeton Reverb Custom '68 through my Mesa Lone Star 19" with a Celestion Vintage 30.
I went back to the 10" Celestion Greenback that I mounted in the cabinet and . . . just not cutting it. SSOOOOO
I now have a NEW project, make a 12" baffle for the Princeton and a new speaker.

I know that doing that still will not match the Mesa cabinet, but it will be a lot better than the 10" in it now.
The Princeton cabinet is already notched to accept a 12" speaker.

Dude, I dropped a Celestion G-10 Gold into my '68 Princeton and it slays. Not cheap, but required no mods and I actually prefer the sound of it in the Princeton to the sound of it plugged into my own Lone Star 19 (though mine has the C-90 in it).

Was thinking the Celestion Vintage 30 like my Lone Star cabinet has. Now though @gball has me thinking. Damn it all to hell.
I gotta do something though, not sure now, guess I'll think on it while eating lunch.

ChasFred, I'll point out then that the Mesa V-30 (which is different and much better than the standard V-30) is about $150 and the Gold is $175...with no mods necessary. If I didn't tell you it was a 10" and not a 12" you would never know from the sound of it, and the Alnico has a sweetness in the top end that a V-30 just does not. That speaker mod turned a really good amp into a giant-killer for me, and even added some headroom in the process.

Have you tried a Jensen? I had a P10R in my Pro Junior. The guy I bought it from had it in Princeton. It sounded great in both amps.

I seem to be liking Warehouse and Eminence best lately - well, besides my tore up, papered and glued, contact cemented, and spray painted speakers that is...

Somebody had WAY TOO much time to burn for sure. Now my head is spinning

gball, if it is not any trouble for you, and your set up for it, could you send me a sound clip of the Celestion Gold please. I have excellent headphones to listen with.

Wish I could but I'm only set up to record direct, no mics. I use the CabClone direct out from my Mk 5 or the USB out from my Katana for recording.

In this video the Celestion Gold 10 really shines when the player gets his guitar on the bridge pickup, at the halfway mark:

That really does kind of sum it up. The Gold is meatier and "bigger" sounding than the Jensen (or the stock Celestion). Gotta keep in mind too that the '68 is much darker-sounding than the '65 and breaks up way sooner, but the improvement in tone is equivalent.
