The Who's Pete Townshend Decides to "Thank God" Keith Moon and John Entwistle Are Dead

Gball, this is my message I put in the clip above with Geddy.

"Having heard Geddy here from the first question on is one of the best reasons I like him so much. HE is a riot and such a regular guy. Seems so nice. If I could ever meet Geddy or at the least have him read my impression of him, I would hope he could be blessed to hear I sure do thank him for the Music, and moreso the man he is. Geddy, has truly enriched the world both with making people happy and with his benevolence."

You know what's funny? I could have said Hi to Neil about a year ago but chose not to because he is so famously secretive.

He lives in Santa Monica, I live in Hermosa Beach, about 15 miles south. One day I was driving back home along the coast (for the locals, I was on Vista Del Mar in El Segundo heading into El Porto), and stopped at a light. A motorcycle pulled up next to me in the other lane and I casually glanced over, and not 5 feet away was The Man. My window was open and it would have been easy to say something, and with any other of my heroes I wouldn't have hesitated, but knowing how he feels about that stuff I just thought to myself, how cool, and let it pass.

Gball, I often have wanted to pass on my expression of sincerest admiration to Neil. How to do it in a calm unobtrusive manner for the same reason as you is the hard part other than my Geographical obstacle.

Now you know how I felt the day I saw Johnny U at the gas station. He was an outgoing and friendly man, but I felt respect for him to just be a regular Joe. It caught me off guard when he was the conversation starter.

HAHA YOU could have played dumb and said, HEY ThAT is a sweeet bike ya got there!!!!

It's a funny thing, you know? Living in LA you see celebrities of all types pretty much all over. We dine in and hang out in both Hermosa and Manhattan Beach (next town over) quite frequently, and its a place (the South Bay, Los Angeles) where a lot of celebrities (film, TV, music, LOTS of athletes) have homes, full-time or otherwise. We run into them and a lot of times drink with them at bars and such and really never address their celebrity, and they are always interesting to talk to and extremely friendly. They're just normal people and I think they love that the locals are unfazed by it all, and the only time I see people act weird is when somebody geeks out on them.

Yup, funny thing happened to me in West Hollywood. The woman I was with took me to The Whiskey,,,,, then wanted to go to The Roxy I think it was called. I really was tired as it was a long flight out there that day. But I said ok and the doorman was checking ID and told me he'd let me in free due to me being from Md. He said he was too.

Now I will send you and Robert my apologies, oh and all the others who can't stand listening to WHO music.
There is just something about the raw bombast that they could keep somewhat controlled to play songs like this, that had me listen to and attend Who concerts back in the post Moon days even.

Here's the thing though. I don't dislike it, per-se, I just don't like it or understand the fuss about the band, and to make it worse it just sounds like background music to me at this point. Like the Bee-Gees (who incidentally I would actually prefer to listen to), Journey or the Beach Boys. Old-guy soundtrack stuff that's played on "classic" rock radio.

Gball, I understand your tastes and how you pursue finding the music live or recorded that you enjoy................ As for the disliking part, I mean for those who actually do dislike Who music...

I go on to explain my internalizing of the tunes or performances from back as I was growing into the music scene which took me to see the WHO back in 82. Of course there was BOC, RUSH and a fair number of other cool concerts then too.
When it was All I know and knew, hunted for etc, if it was anything unique and different than I ever was exposed to at the time, in other words, If I had not heard it, I checked it out. It didn't matter if it was Leppard, Jimi, Tom Jones, Redbone, Tull, Alice, Grand Funk, Led Zep, Sex Pistols, Clash, Stooges, Jazz, Bluegrass, Classical Symphonies, Police, Blondie, Ratt, Van Halen,,,,,,,,,,,,etc. If I could take a virgin ear to it, check it out, and find the cool in it, that is how I pursued and liked or disliked music of all types.

Guess that is what prepared me to love bands like Rush and Yes and Gentle Giant and Dream Theater, Crack The Sky, as well as I did Metallica, Megadeth, Dokken, Rammstein, Alice in Chains, STP, Floyd, Hatebreed, Rob Zombie, Maiden, Soundgarden etc etc

I get it. As I kid I also tried to absorb as much different music as I could. The Who just never resonated with me, no matter how much I tried to listen and/or like them. I was just into "rock" music more generally and then the seismic shift occurred when I heard Black Sabbath for the fist time. There was only life before Sabbath and life after Sabbath...many other bands I have loved and listened to but nothing has ever come close to the out-of-body experience I had hearing them for the first time.

I think under the right circumstances a person can be opened up to a different band or style.

I was not into the Who. The first band I tried to form in high school with a friend, he was into the Who and myself into the Beatles. What I could not see
about the Who from my own perspective, I seen through the eyes and ears of my friend/bandmate, and got hooked.

I got into a lot of different bands music this way. I never was interested in Led Zeppelin, yet another band I was in, they were.
After learning a few Led Zeppelin songs I was hooked. The Ocean was my favorite to play on bass!

That was me when I heard Deep Purple at the barber shop at like 9 yrs old then for real the first time I heard Running With The Devil.

I like The Who nearly as much as The Beatles. I also like the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. I would rather play like Led Zeppelin or AC/DC from a stylistic stand point. I don't know where I am going with this other than they are all good in their own right. John and Keith were power houses for sure. Really enjoyed John's playing. He was fantastic as a bass player. Geddy and the boys are right up there too.

How about his Green 1962 Jazz, Adrian?

Great Share!!

Two Awesome quotes from Geddy Lee "The way you sound has to be your decision"
" You have to find the pieces of gear, that make you sound like the best version of you"

I just found what to put for a signature at the bottom!
Timely advise from a Great Bassist and Hell of a Band! :dood:

Thanks chilipeppermaniac!
