Johan is at it again!!! 17 preamp tubes compaired

ECC823.... :)

The tubes don't make a huge difference, IMHO, more like a subtle nuance or they offer more or less of a given gain setting.

I have BOXES of tubes here from my mad scientist experiments. In then end, I found that in the DSL40C's, it's important to kill off some of the gain.

The best combo thus far has been:

V1 - ECC823
V2 - JJ 5751
V3 - 7025-WA
V4- JJ5751

Fascinating. I seriously don't know if I wish I had the kind of time on my hands that this dude does or not. He seems to constantly be looking for things to fill the void.
I've thought about the same thing. Also, Johan's demos are usually about interesting comparisons that I would like to try but have no knowledge, resources, money, and TIME to do what he does! "Let's go!"

I can hear the differences of most tubes!@ I really like the RCA Blackplates, the 17mm plate Mullard ECC83, Gold Lion KT66, KT88 and especially The Mullard EL37! Never pass them up, get em and then pass them up to me, well test em later! help.gif 36_11_6.gif It's is different with each amp and tube. The telefunken 12AX7 is an outstanding tube but in my AC30's there just too bright. 6V6's with Octal preamp tubes sound amazing! I know everyone hears differently and for every listener there will be different opinions and that is what makes the subject so cool. New ones I don't really care for for various reasons BUT if you get a better production run as each varies then you did good. To do that you have to have a dude who goes thru em a lot like an busy amp repair place to know which particular runs are optimum. Original used or NOS ones are a real murky world as you need to study the insides very carefully to know if there legitimate. I could go on and on about this ….. till I get carpal tunnel

I really like the sound of some 6V6 amps. I had a Rivera with 6V6's and wow did that thing grind at high volume. Great low end from them too.

From what I understand, the 6V6 was developed/used as a radio tube for car radios when they used tubes in car radios. RCA specked em out at 315 plate volts WELL the Blackface Fender Deluxe ran 420 volts true em , the catch is, the line power was 110v back then which yielded less plate voltage back then. I just checked my wall AC and it read out @ 123 v. I have a schematic/design I've saved for 35 years now that I've been jone's in to build, still jone's in, it takes 2- 6V6's and runs em separately cathode biased but in parallel. Of course I wanted octal preamp tubes, like the earlier Tweed Amps. And, keep them a little under filtered, not much , just a little.

So, you need a veriac?

Yes, the 6V6 was developed (by Ken-Rad) as an output tube for automotive radios & battery powered receivers etc. Design maximum plate voltage rating is 350V15738475973278254613504913927554.png
The screen grid (g2) has design maximum rating of 315V. Also of note, some 6V6's have a maximum plate dissipation rating of 12 watts while others are rated at 14 watts.
A single ended parallel 6V6 amp would be a sweet amp. Cheers

I love putzing around with different tubes and as a result I've accumulated quite a stash of both current and vintage varieties. I've found that:

Marshall amps love RFT preamp tubes and pack a lot of wallop

Telefunken tubes sound best in microphone preamps

Amperex globe logo tubes sound pretty good in just about anything

Amperex Bugle Boys same as above^

Mullard preamp tubes are great for smoothing brittle or overly bright amps

GE power tubes are outstanding in the 2203 and 2204. Anyone who says power tubes don't make much difference is in for a treat

(YMMV because everyone's gear is different)
