BOSS AC-3 Acoustic Simulator

Guys,

I have a chance to pick up one of these at a reasonably good price. The reviews on-line are hit or miss.

I am not expecting to turn my LP or PRS into a Gibson Songbird or anything like that. I just want to be able to get a reasonable facsimile of an acoustic without having to haul one to rehearsal. I am just hoping that you folks here may have some experience with this pedal.

Any information is appreciated! Thanks.

So I picked up the pedal and gave it a bit of a workout last night. I guess this thread is now going to turn into a pedal review.

Does the BOSS AC-3 make my Strat magically sound like a vintage Martin 00-18? How about a beautiful Taylor Grand Auditorium? I think we all know the answer! NO!
Does it pull off a "good enough" acoustic sound so I don't have to take a second guitar to rehearsal? I would argue YES. Of course YMMV.
The online reviews indicate that it sounds very good using the Line Out direct to a PA. As I don't have my PA set up, I was unable to try that out. I ran the G. Amp output to my Traynor YCV40 clean channel. To me it sounded best in the "enhance" mode and with a bit of onboard reverb dialed in. It is no surprise that it seems to work much better with single coils than with humbuckers. It will be interesting to see how it will sit in the mix at jam night next week. I am hoping to use it for "Wish You Were Here" and maybe a Tragically Hip song or two.

Damn dude -- you didnt even give us time to respond to the initial question before buying the thing---

I know NOTHING about acosutic gutiars---- I have one -- it is a 70's era Epiphone....in a case....in a corner -- under a mountain of dust and dog hair-- as I recall it is very nice and makes lovely acoustical emanations and sound full enjoyment ......when played by "others" ....

as I recall its an FT-120 or 150 -- or some such made in Japan -- herringbone binding---its very nice.......wanna buy it .............
lol

Hey, you had a day and a half! Aren't you sitting by your computer just waiting for me to post something? ;)

Yeah, I know I didn't give much of a chance for responses. I didn't want to miss out on the deal but the good thing is that I have 30 days to return it if I am not satisfied.

I'll play with it a bit and see how it works out in a band situation and make my decision from that.

A while back I bought a cheap Behringer acoustic simulator pedal for about $30 but it really didn't sound anything like an acoustic guitar. I passed it along as most of us do with gear that doesn't work for us. This BOSS certainly sounds much better to me than the Behringer did.

They are a Canadian band from Kingston, Ontario best known for their Canadiana subject matter. They are somewhat know in the northern US states as well.
Their lead singer, Gord Downie, passed away 2 years ago from brain cancer.
They did a farewell tour before he died and performed in all of the larger Canadian cities. Their last show was at home in Kingston and my wife and I were there. The show was at the K-ROCK Centre arena in downtown Kingston which holds maybe 15,000 people. We watched the show outside the venue as it was broadcasted live on a giant screen. In addition to the fans that were at the arena, there were an estimated 22,000 of us outside. The show was also carried live on the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) and was viewed by 11.7 Million people.
The fact that almost ONE THIRD of our country's population viewed the show shows how beloved The Tragically Hip are in Canada.

Of course YOU know them!
My comments were more directed to our American friends here. The Hip are not welll known anywhere south of NY state, though I met a couple from Cleveland at the last show who were huge fans and had come to see the last two shows in Toronto and Kingston.

I actually had heard them -- its tragic -- how hip-- they .........were.....and Ironically tragic the loss of Gord....and how weird is it to have TWO Gords in 1 band?!?!?!

The Boss AC-2 is much worse than the AC-3. It's one of the few times where Boss released a new version that was better than the old one.

I've been looking into them as well.

Chubbles,

It is far from perfect but I think it will be a reasonable enough facsimile for what I need it for.
