What Amp, Combo or Separates Do You Prefer for Recording or Home Use?

Being totally green on this bass adventure, as I sit in my cave drinking on my last day of vacation, I am curious what all you bass players like for equipment? As posted elsewhere I will likely start by using one of my 100 watt Marshall heads until I recuperate from my bass build.

Talk to me about tube versus solid state, how many watts, what cab layouts and speaker size/brands. I'm not looking for best of anything as we all know how subjective that is, just what you like, prefer or have found to work the best for you.

Plus, I'm taking bets on how many posts it takes for Adrian to derail the thread!

I use a late ‘70s solid state Marshal Master Lead 100 2x12 combo for bass. It sounds like ass for guitar, but sounds really good for bass. They can usually be found for pretty cheap money. I only paid $150.00 for mine a bunch of years back. I only use it around the house since I’m not a bass player. I just like goofing around on a bass to come up with riffs if I’m in a state of mental block with a guitar.

If I decide to mic a cab instead of going D.I. how much power do you need to sound good on a recording?
lil guy changed everything...has post & pre di out to board & mic the cab. I have SVT rig,,this get its to a T..or will pull b15 motown on ported 15. Can pick it up with 1 hand, the svt210av cab is tight ! It wont do big gig..but the dynamics..the string attack..my studio guy got one immediately after i brought it in. Small..all the tones..handle my jazz,P & thumper Ibby well.
Its an eye opener if you a bass freak..its like playing a plexi with dimed..its just there in response on the guitarRuin load3.jpg

I will try using the D.I. out on this pig initially, but I know I will want a bass set up at some point. BTW that cab is a Crate Bv412s that I scored for $120 worth of parts and cash. I recovered the baffle and stuck in a quartet of Celestion G12T-75's out of my JCM B cab.
