Got contacted on Friday by a SoCal Christian metal band looking for a replacement guitarist. I was shocked to see they had 1,094,000 profile views and over 1,240,000 song plays.

I was given and electronic audition assignment - Create a heavy metal version of "Hark The Herald Angel's Sing" to a backing track in D-standard tuning.

Most of these auditions/discussions/offers (on this level) are associated with non-disclosure agreements. I've let a couple of close chums listen to my submission privately, but if i am allowed, i will post it here shortly.

Being in D-standard - with .009" x .046" strings - required a very, very light and precise touch to keep things in tune. Pick attack also needed adjustment. I used my Les Paul Custom Replica Hardtail for the task.

I'm in D standard mostly all the time. For this, I use .11s.

Hey, Blink...

They sent me a drum track and asked that I compose a D Standard guitar track for it. They also asked for a brief solo composition, which I threw in at the end of the song. Rushed and ragged!!!

NDA won't allow me to identify the band as of yet, but no restriction on my submission. This is my first time venturing into D Standard. I did my typical 6 tracks of rhythm guitars...if a little does a little good...LOL
 
Sounds pretty good. The way you tend to set your EQ with the lows and highs generally suits lower tunings. I tend to find that as I go lower the more the EQ in general goes toward the middle, with a bit of low rolled off. For example, in E standard I might run 6L-5M-7H, but in C standard more like 4L-5M-6H, and keep the resonance down lower if you have that

I tend to run 11-52 string sets in D standard, I find that feels similar to 9-46 in E standard

I'm using my Les Paul for this stuff....so I am not messing with my Floyd's.

Funny thing is that I have always heard horror stories about playing in "worship" bands. Never done it but have known a lot of people who did, for one reason or another, and it always sounded awful to me (aside from the musical selections). No judgment on my part for anyone that wants to do it, but it seems like the kind of gig you'd really have to want to do.

I think maybe there's a difference between a Christian metal band and a worship band.

Probably true. I'm inferring too much from Robert being asked to do a cover perhaps? In the past whenever I have auditioned for a band I've been given a piece of their original music to learn, not asked to interpret/reimagine a cover version of a well-known song so, I guess the worship band thing crept into my thinking.
