What Is He Thinking??? (NGD)

Minneapolis is at 73% right now and it's 58 degrees. I still have the air on to keep the humidity out of the house. If I opened the windows now I would be chasing the tuning on all of my guitars as the indoor humidity is about 45%. They can be unstable for easily 2 days while they normalize. It does affect the Gibsons more than the Fenders, but still happens to them as well.

I am working in Long Beach California, not sure on the humidity, but it’s 93 degrees right now

I was just looking at a table that lists moisture content equilibrium of wood based on temp and relative humidity. In general (regardless of species) at 70 degrees F and 35% humidity equilibrium is 6.9% moisture content. at 90 degrees F and 15% humidity it is 3.4% moisture content. Therefore, by taking your guitar outside it is roughly trying to halve the moisture content. It also stated that the wood would be initially affected most on the outer surfaces. This could make the neck bend and evidently it is also dependent on how the would was cut. Flat vs. quarter. Just some random musings.

Very good points!!!!

Dont know...13% outside

You desert rats -- dunno how ya do it--- my gills would dry up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in Minneapolis over Labor Day weekend to go to the state fair, and hang out with some friends of mine. They live in Blaine and Ramsey.

The only time it's 13% humidity up here in the Northeast is during Late December to early February. It is also about 10 degrees. My guitars hate being played at gigs during that time. Nothing stays in tune.

I'm about to perform a little experiment. The wife and I are going to Palm Springs for the weekend and I am taking a guitar (not sure which one yet) so I have something to goof around with while we sit by the pool.

It's currently 73-degrees and 73% humidity in Hermosa Beach. I'll have the guitar in the back of the air conditioned car on the roughly 2.5 hour drive, so the temp will be about the same with probably a bit less humidity, but the guitar will be in its case. It's going to be 111-degrees in Palm Springs tomorrow, with 6% (yes SIX percent) humidity. I'll report back what the guitar does, both going and coming back. Should be interesting.

But that’s my job, if I get someone else I get no pay, this is what we do when it slows down with the company I work for.
Most of the time I have a crew!
But not today!!
Looking forward to an ice cold beer once I get home!
Cheers Mitch
