Pickup Building Supplies

not being "difficult" here-- but have ya tried any Guitar Madness (ebay) pickups? or Guitarfetish?
these are 19-40.00 each pups that --- TBTH -- really sound great-- and no assembly required ........

I just loaded some 24.00 GM pups in my peavey Unity bass (pulled the vintage Schallers from the "p" section of the "P/J" -- and ........I cant distinguish them from the Duncan "P" pups in my "P" bass..........(that cost 3 times as much)

just trying to help ;)


NOW that said if'in you want to LEARN and es'periment and dabble in the magnetic winding arts..do NOT let me sway you -- as we all know I am a lazy sot who seeks the easy (cheap) path ;)

I apreceiate all suggestions. Magnets are $4 each and I just happen to have a spare pair of Gibby p'ups I can experiment with.
 
Several guys on the Agile forum swap magnets in pickups. It's not my thing. Seems like delicate work. I also like Guitar Madness pickups. I have them in several guitars.

Magnet changes are subtle, IMHO.

I've never had a magnet swap make me love a pickup that I didn't like, but a magnet swap has given me more of what I like from a pickup I already liked.

I recently put an A4 into a Gibson/Wildwood for a co-worker, which added a little output, but more importantly, it gave each frequency what I can only describe as "a little something extra."

GM pickups I have tried a couple - very happy.
GFS hit or miss for me, lot of fans out there though.

I have bought several times from Phila. Luthiers, parts, tools, and pick up magnets.
very good supplier, plus fast ship to me in NJ.

Swapping HB or P90 magnets is not difficult; it has a little learning curve at first like anything else.
I have had mixed results - the 2 or 3 times I switched out ceramics in budget brand stock pick ups to A2 or A5 with very acceptable improvements.

Cheapy P90s I couldnt get anything I liked between ceramic, A2 or A5.

It is worth a try especially in semi hollows with the access / difficulty / frustration factor, got that Vern?

I got offered a free pickup winder last year, nothing fancy; the guy got himself a more advanced one.
Just dont have time for more rabbit holes.
