SSL certificate for this site?

ok, is there some sort of hoster / service provider that we use here ? In theory, the Hoster would have to put the Certificate in place.

The only possible issue would be migrating the forum (if it needed to be migrated to have the HTTPS).
Greetings Hector,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Grant, but my friends call me Wav. I along with RVA and eSGEe are your hosts. I rent a virtual server that this site is hosted on. I have been working in the internet business since 1996, 3 years before Al Gore invented it! Aside from building this forum, I have built a plethora of web sites, many very high profile. You are welcome to click on the link at the bottom of this page WavMixer Web Development where you can learn more about me. Web hosting services can put the certificate in place on the server. This first step requires a CSR and key to be generated for the server it will be hosted on. The CSR is then provided to the SSL Registrar to create the SSL certificate. Before issuing the SSL certificate, the registrar goes through a vetting process to ensure that this is indeed a legitimate business. Once they have determined that you are worthy, they issue you a SSL certificate to be installed on the server by the hosting company.

Now once the certificate is in place, the web site will not function with the HTTPS until the config files have been edited to reflect the new HTTPS as the main site to go to for this domain or sub-domain as the case may be. Even after doing all of this, the site will still not be secure until every link, on every page, in every post, for every picture or attached file has had the links changed from http to https. You may ask "How do you know this Wav?" I know this because I have done this many times over many years, the most recent SSL I set up just went live last week Keyboard Concepts Online Store

I spent many hours getting that site moved to the dedicated secure server with a static IP. I really do not look forward to spending the same amount of time to move this forum. Now if by any chance we someday decide to sell something here, we will definitely need a SSL certificate in place. But for right now I'm not worried about anybody trying to steal pictures of my guitars.

Wav I see no need for the SSL, I have some experience but nothing to match yours. I see no need to add more burden on you my friend.
I believe the forum functions fine as is. We are very fortunate that there is no charge for use.

I feel it is time to put this to rest. No disrespect intended towards Hector.

Ah, ok. I understand. I didn't know this place was a home-grown, spit and bailing wire solution.

Only thing I will say is that Google will eventually require https to even consider showing a site in search results. So if you guys want to grow this place with new members, that might be something to look at in the future.

Home grown yes, from coast to coast, north to south, grown here at home in the USA. Spit and bailing wire, not so much. We are using the latest and greatest forum software hosted on a Cent OS server with a triple redundant RAID. This is piped into a T3 connection direct to the backbone of the interweb. We use fiber optics here instead of bailing wire and my mom taught me at a very young age it's not polite to spit. I do thank you for your concern regarding our SEO, members input regarding this site is always welcome. You not knowing that we are just a small operation and not some corporate backed digital entity is a testament to my programming and design abilities, for this I thank you for the compliment.

I was programming in HTML before Google was launched and have been keeping up to date with Google's ever-changing algorithms which can and have changed on a daily basis. Someday perhaps Google will require HTTPS to be included in their search results, but this is not the case today. This site is currently up to date with Google's algorithm and is crawled by multiple spiders consistently, you might even say persistently. The conception of this forum was based on a few good friends to have a place to chill and talk gear. All of the original members here were personally selected by the admins and personally invited to join us here. If our only source of membership is when one of our cool members invites one of his/her cool friends, that's fine by me. If 10 ass hats find this place from Google bringing a snotty attitude like the type that can be found on some other forums, does this help our forum? I'd rather have 1/10 the membership that are cream of the crop members then to have 10 times as many members full of jerks.

@WavMixer

You misunderstand me. You don't have to flex your credentials to justify or defend your decisions by saying what sort of hardware you have, or how technically advanced the forum is, nor how long you have been hacking HTML or how well you know Google's algorithm etc (you're not the only one).

If you don't think it's worth the work and/or don't think having more members is important, then as the owner(s) of this forum, that's your business. I was simply making a suggestion.

My point is at this time it is an extra expense and time intensive task that is not required at this time, however I do thank you for your input.

At the time of this posting I see 3 Google bots & 4 Bing bots in the process of crawling our site http://www.thetonerooms.com/online/

Actually this place is very robot friendly (members: 9, guests: 4, robots: 10), they are always welcome here.

Please do excuse me if I come off strongly in defense of this site and how it is run. The comment about spit and bailing wire gave me the impression that you thought we were running this web site off a re-purposed home computer in someone's garage over a cable modem or some similar setup. People here have put in a great deal of time and effort to make this forum what it is today. You can tell me that I play like crap, that's OK. You can tell me that I own ugly cheap guitars, that's OK. However when you question the integrity of this forum, I gotta stand up and defend my online home.

So Hector, you seem to know something about the SSL/SEO process, is this your field of work?

Personally. I like that we have fewer than 300 members here. Another forum I’m on has 11k plus and sometime it can turn into a cesspool. So far this place is like family. We don’t always agree. We may agree to disagree. We’ve shared some pretty personal stuff. We share some good gear stuff and sometimes we get a little crazy..... no offense Adrian.

But we rarely if ever react in an obnoxious or foul manner!

We have considered making shirts but we would have to make and sell a lot to make an order affordable
I have had shirts made out here locally, and if I could find a photo of the art work I would love to show you, it cost me 120$ for the artwork and I had to have minimal of 12 shirts made, and what I did to aleviate the price of the artwork was to charge my guys 10$ a shirt, of course the more that are made the less the cost, and the artist is still known to us because my son had him make all of his
Soccer banners for years! I can check with him on a price and for a 20 shirt count, they were fruit of the loom, nice quality shirts

As far as I can tell, the site already has an https address, yes?
Maybe not on mobile devices, don't know - I'm on a laptop.
