Low cost home WiFi

Walks Backward

Ok. I am far from flush here. But I'm tired of using this stinking phone to do internet stuff. I need a WiFi. A year or so ago I got Freedom Pop, but it sucked out loud. And often double charged as well. Told them to preform unnatural acts with themselves.

So...... suggestions? Who has a reliable, affordable, and non-sucky WiFi that's cheap but still effective. And simple for a non-technology person. Wow, that's a huge request huh?:rolleyes2:

Whats cheap?

I have the old Time Warner and I get a blazing 200mb per second for $55 a month. I am running 3 desk top computers, two ipads, and two phones. I can run downloads
on all the devices at once with no slow down in service. When my kids come and add 4 more phones and two more ipads still no slowdown. I'm also running a couple wifi
surveillance cameras, a couple wifi light switches and a wifi box for my directv.

If I would have tried this with my old AT&T service it would have come to a dead halt and exploded...

YOu will need to check whats avaialble in your area Wade. I hear FIOS is good at reaching areas not serviced by big city cable ----

Sp8ctre that is AMAZING ---- I pay 3 times that for that speed..... of course its all a write off (home office and all) but still ---- I cant get anything close for less$ speed wise-

I agree and was very surprised and happy! It will go up to $59 after the two year lock, but I'll brow beat them back down...

Have you tried a "pre paid" wifi router?
You buy the hardware (probably less than $50) and pre pay a certain amount of data.
When you run out, you buy more data, when you can afford it. No contracts or double-charging.
The only problem I can see is the reception in your area. But if your cell phone works, so should wifi.

Back in 1997 the govemnet told the cable companys that u can have a monolopy on internet so there was 4 companys now there is 2 cause they merged, america has the slowiest internet in the world even france and the uk has fatser intenet they can down load a high def moive in 6 second. And we pay the most out of anybody in the world, in aouth korea they pay 20 bucks a month for 300 mps
Ok im done with my rant

I think we are slower than the US, @tazz3 - Our new "National Broadband Network" is slower than New Zealand, and even slower than some so-called "3rd World" countries...
It just happens to be that our new Prime Minister was the Communications Minister at the time when we were deciding on Internet speeds... He's a billionaire anyway, so it wouldn't affect him. - He would just pay for the best internet you can get and still get blazing fast speeds, while everyone else gets internet that's slower than a snail on crutches...

Depending on your cell phone Wade--- it can be a "hot spot" --- I can run my laptop off my iPhone for work when i am out in the field--- I have sat in on conference video calls -- from my car using my iPhone as my "wifi" ---if your cell carrier has unlimited data--- there is your answer.

Yeah, had been told about that hot spot business and down loaded an app for that and it screwed up my phone. If the phone is not used in 30min now it locks the screen. And it can't be reversed. And of course no hot spot either. So when I go to use the phone for anything I gotta do a password thing to unlock the phone. It blows! So right now the WiFi thing is on hold anyway ..... Oh well. :rolleyes2:

When I'm on vacation, I bring this:

It's a 3G Wireless Hotspot. I think it cost me about $40.
You charge it up with say, $30 of Data credit, (you can buy credit at most convenience stores, gas stations etc) and it lasts all month, unless you are on the internet all day, every day. (I'm not sure of data charges etc in the USA... But here in Australia, you can get different "plans" which dictate how much data you get for your money)
It works most places. Had my laptop on WiFi at a beach that was completely uninhabited. As long as you can get a cellphone signal, you can get internet.

I'm with Alex on this one re internet speed. My son plays online games. Nothing massively internet intensive (so he tells me) but if he buys a new game what he is essentially purchasing is a download code as they no longer have the whole game on a disc. Depending on the game it has taken up to 10 days to download at my place. Yes that's correct 10 days, running 24 hours per day. If things are running well, a standard definition movie might download in about 8-10 hours as long as nobody else uses the internet.
I've just come back from a second holiday to North America in the last 12 months and the hotel free wifi I used in the US and Canada absolutely flies compared to what I have to put up with here!
Apparently our new National Broadband Network won't even roll out in my neck of the woods for another 2 years.
Rants? I've got plenty when it comes to broadband

Remember, this is how I repair computer issues. Like I always say "There's not a problem I can't resolve with either a good left hook or a slug from a .45." :coffee::mad:

Oh, that was from my BIG 45, a 45-70 lever action.
That had to hurt a little. My brother had a single action, break down model GOVT 45/70 that I shot once.....ONLY ONCE...
Narrow buttstock, with a real thin pad, ouch...
I'd rather shoot a double barrel 12ga, both at once.

Naw, I cast my own and hand load all my own ammo. Though a 45-70 can be loaded in strong actions to shoulder bruising levels, it originally was a black powder cartridge with around 13,000psi. And a velocity of 1,250fps. For my shooting that 6.5# 18" barrel carbine was loaded to the BP equivalent. Just gave a nice punch but not painful. But now my brother in S. Dakota has it and he's bigger, younger, and crazier than me. He does load it rather warm.
