Do you consider yourself a guitar player or a musician?

Nice, its funny i admire guys like you that can nail Motorhead ect..when i heard your clip..i smiled & said,,man would love to share some stage time with this guy. I absolutely get the earning money part. I have tried to play others music but i interpret it differently & stay in key or scale but venture off a lil. Both are needed..seems to be such opposite approaches..My fav of all..is when you have a band that shares & brings out the best....time goes by..the unspoken ability to share music together..i live for it

That's kind of you to say. Motorhead was an early influence and I dug their "tough guy" look and being a skinny kid with glasses, I wanted to be at least less geeky looking, if not a little more cool...

Music is all I truly ever wanted to do. My Mom groomed me to take over her band, but I was a rocker, so i never stepped into that role permanently, but I learned a out being a good supporting musician.

I watch for "holes" as Mom likes to call it. When the singer steps back to cough or clear their throat, I just take up the slack. When the lead player steps on his cable and jerks it out of the guitar, I take over the solo part.

When a guitarist recently hopped off the drum riser - after lassoing the high hat - I slid my guitar to my back and set it back up, then pounded on it a little with a drum stick from the floor, then tossed it gently to the crowd.

Kinda make lemonade out of sonic lemons I suppose...

Being a good band member means being alert and keeping the train moving.

This was a bit of a trick question. I actually believe if you play an instrument at any level you are a musician. I have really enjoyed reading through this thread. Keep it up. It speaks to everyone's passion about music and guitars. I'm very passionate about my music. It is on my mind 24/7. I'm not great at playing any instruments but I love playing them all. I love taking a song apart and trying to figure out what makes the song different form other songs. I love trying to write songs even though it is a major struggle. I love trying to come with an arrangement to make a cover mine while still maintaining the integrity of the original.

I know just enough to make a fool of myself, and I will foolishly continue, I have forgotten more cover songs than I can count,
I made a half hearted attempt to cover the rhythm of a UFO tune that I like, but don’t ask me to play it today, because I have not set with it for an hour to remember it ha ha,
I have about 28 or so of my own songs I have to remember.
That’s why I have a you tube channel, to record an idea, so I don’t forget it, or the melody,
So not really a musician, but a guitar hack comes to mind!
Cheers Mitch

It's a happy habit...like Heroin but without the needle...

This is awesome. I also watch for "holes" although I don't think I'm as good at filling them as you are.

Good going!!!!

My mind is going a dozen different directions on stage...most of the time, I'm having these internal discussion or ponderings...

Here's a recent stage conversation I had with myself...seriously.

"Why so much gain today??? Geez, has he ever intonated that guitar??? That open 'g' sounds off, Man...well, at least the crowd is digging it...oh, God...hope they are not deaf and just moving to our movements...wonder if Red Robin still has bottomless fries??? Damn, the bass playing is doing that minor third inversion bullshit again...just play a fookin 'b,' Man...wonder which one of these clowns farted??? Smells like a burned pumpkin...cant be healthy to breathe that putrid stench...assholes...well, hopefully everyone will get this ending right...here it comes... AND FOOK ME THEY GOT IT RIGHT!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!...I want a hamburger..."

And I will always be a hack but I feel I am getting better at it

Im neither --- Im a hack-- I know few chords-- some runs and riff -- still remember a few songs from the old days I can muddle through on guitar--
I can carry a bass line -- and hold down the bottom -- I have timing -- no knowledge or skill-- no ability to read music or show you WHERE the Fmajor7 is on the fret board (is that at thing?)
I can jam and hold a groove--
I can noodle and relax and use tinkering and flipping guitars as a nice hobby that keeps me from going postal and murdering a large portion of humanity or as I call them MORONS ....

Im neither really ---- but am both in a sense ---

did someone say we had nachos?
