Your first Concert you went to.

John Mayall was the headliner. Johnny Winter was the opener. Johnny was playing with Rick Derringer and Randy Jo Hobbs on bass. It was the start of a lifelong love of the blues. John Mayall had Harvey Mandel on guitar. It was the first time I ever heard finger tapping on a guitar.

REO Speedwagon
1977
Alpine Valley, Wi.
Being from Western Illinois in the Rock Island Ill and Davenport IA neighborhood. We knew all about REO when they were playing the Quad City bars in the early 70s. We were just too young to get in. Wasn’t till their Wheels Are Turning tour in about 83 when I finally got to see them. Cheap Trick opened. Cedar Rapids IA. It was awesome!!!

I'm from the Northern Chicago suburbs, they were the local boys done good.

Until the ballads, stupid stupid ballads lol.

That's why I always wanted a LP and a Marshall, Gary Richrath.
Gary doesn’t get a lot of credit. He certainly had some inner demons he had to deal with. And ultimately I understand the band letting him go.

It’s also been suggested he wasn’t the most technically gifted ax slinger out there. Maybe.... maybe not. But from this REO fan. I can tell the records he’s played on and the guys that have come after. They may play the same notes but they don’t put the same heart and soul into it that Gary did. And I’ve never felt they were the same group post Gary.
