Hi all

Since I'm off work at the moment, with loads of time on my hands but very little disposable cash, I decided to put together a tool kit to use for doing setups and minor repairs.

Most of these tools were just ones that I pulled out of my tool chest.
I've broken it down into 2 major groups, for the moment.

1st Group - Measuring tools.

In this group, there's 6" and 12" rulers, a Vernier Caliper, a string action gauge, feeler gauges and a multimeter.

These are all fantastic for checking string height, pickup height, neck straightness and dc resistance of pots or pickups.

The 2nd group is a basic setup/cleaning/minor surgery kit.

I built a neck rest out of some pine cut-offs I had lying around and covered the top with some felt to prevent scratching guitar necks.

I got a Stewart MacDonald guitar tech screwdriver kit for my birthday... That's gotta be included!

Also included: Tweezers/Forceps, a single sided razor blade, an exacto knife, 11 and 13mm wrench for pot nuts, string winder/cutter, a pitch pipe, a capo with built in tuner, lemon oil, a Victorinox Swiss Tool multi tool, some small side cutters and a small fine file.

I also have soldering equipment, microfibre cloths, sandpapers of various grades, cloths, 3 in 1 oil, steel wool (00000) and polish.

You can spend hundreds of dollars on setup tools, but most of us with any slight mechanical bent would have many of the tools you need already.

If you can think of anything else that should be included, please let me know!

Looks like you've got it covered. I was going to say tuner, but I see you have one on the capo. I usually use the old trusty Korg to get close but fine tune the intonation with this on my netbook:

I can't use that tuner as I have a Mac, but I use this instead:

It's basically the same thing and is very sensitive, even picking up notes using the mic built in to the monitor!

I normally use a Korg tuner that I plug into the guitar with a patch cord which is very accurate.
The capo tuner is ok, but I wouldn't say it is extremely accurate - more like it's "ok" for ballpark tuning.

Mine are normally kept in a toolbox my son made for me in the 4th grade!
It's a cheap "'pre-fab" wood and ply open top box painted fire engine red, but it has sentimental value.

What is a set up?

Is it basic action height and neck relief adjustments?

Beyond that, an ala-carte menu of more specialized procedures if deemed necessary to really "set up" any individual guitar to a good degree or maximize its playability?

Like you said if you are a Tool you will have most of it around.
I find I dont measure much of anything anymore, except for use of the multi-meter.

I dont see a truss rod wrench unless the multi bit set covers that. I keep mine and the little hex keys for saddle height in the box with the little / precision screwdriver kit.
Green scotch brite tames shiny sticky necks.

theres some other stuff like my soldering iron in the junk drawer.this stuff sits on a little shelf right beside my Sofa
