Pocketknives?

Arkansas Toothpick is my favorite...but for daily carry, the Applegate-Fairbairn Combat dagger is best.

Combat dagger? Come on Robert, be reasonable. We are talking whittling sticks, not ambushing Viet Cong. And it needs to go in your pocket.

And therein lies the problem.
It's all about perception.

"OMG! Why are you carrying around that weapon!?"
"It's not a weapon. It's a tool."
"Well, how much damage could it do!?"
"None. It's an inanimate object."
"You know what I mean. How much?"
"Well, it's absolute murder on packing tape and string."

Ever open an Amazon box with an open scissor?
That's a really good way to lose a fingertip.

I don't carry a knife, and I've never felt the lack, But my Leatherman Supertool is never far away. And if I'm working in the garden a Mora or an Ahti are hanging on my belt. They are Scandinavian knives made from super steel and hold an edge better than the average razor.

Adrian, that thing would be a mandatory arrest in NYC.
The NYC carry laws are a little strange. The size is OK but
the belt clip and 1 hand operation would get you nailed.
No part of the knife can be displayed here.
but...
There is no random "stop and search"
so as long as it's hidden you can get away
with carrying pretty much anything you want.
If they can't see it they can't look for it.

...if I'm reading it correctly that is.
I'm not a lawyer.

There are infinite reasons why I have no desire to live -- or even visit --- New York -- California or any of our other more communist states--- the fact THAT little pocket knife is an arrest-able offense ranks about #3.

--- oh perhaps I should have shown the way we Southerners wear our knives to church ;) .......nothing "showing" -- could be a money clip---or a glasses case----and with my shirt down--- nothing is seen at all----

FYI my .25 cal Italian pocket rocket semi auto pistol fits in there the same way --- similar clip showing--- and that is all---

I'm very happy to live somewhere I don't feel that need.
Don I basically live in the country -- on a semi working farm -- I was cutting strings on hail bays this morning --- fixing fence clipping wires and various other things--

its not I "fear" for where I live -- frankly its the opposite ---

I am glad you are safe and comfortable where you are--- as am I where I am --

I wasn't really talking about the knife - that is just a tool. It is the - to my mind - strange attempt to conceal it. When I wear one I wouldn't dream of doing that. I mean, who exactly am I concealing it from and what is my purpose in keeping it hidden? That bailer twine isn't going to run off it spots a knife.

I suppose my 20 years as a cop and 6 years as a counter-terrorism specialist in the USNR taught me to be cautious and always prepared for anything that might happen.

Here in London we know all about terrorism. I lost two friends to the IRA, and in Kabul I lost another to the Taleban. In none of those situations would quick access to a knife have made any difference. HOw does it go? You don't take a knife to a bomb fight.

it fits comfortably in the pocket and does not get knocked off (as it could when hanging from a belt ) or fall lose if your trying to catch a goat or trim pig tusks -- or whatever...

you've not worked on a farm much have you???
