ZZ Top runs to the mix from an isolation cabinet.

Those amps on stage are effectively for stage sound and visual effect.

Also, Billy’s guitars are heavily EQ’d from backstage to make them sound as much like his Les Paul, “Pearly Gates,” as possible - not to mention the additional editing and EQing done in post-production.

Things are not as they appear...

Those are old Kustom PA columns.
They are stage dressing and in all likelihood empty dummies.
ZZ Top uses offstage isolation cabs and everything is mixed at FOH.
They may as well have used washing machines for a backline.

I was kinda poking fun...but I got a kick out of the "BASIC AMPLIFIERS" scrims...
 
I gotta say this....I been the only guitarist lots of times and it's not easy to fill out the sonic spectrum as smooth and effortless as The Reverand. Respect...
 
The first time I saw ZZ Top was 1971 Billy used a 100 watt Marshall 1/2 stack on stage with his Les Paul and a fake Flying Vee
My friend Phil Oxley is close friends with Dusty Hill. Billy is full of BS most of the time. Dusty said La Grange was recorded on a pink 1957 Strat that Jimi Hendrix
gave Billy and two Tweed Fender Deluxe amps. Billy is a billionaire not from playing guitar from his father.
