Cleared Out Some Gear at GC Today

I became increasingly disgusted with responses I received from CL this week. People wanting me to drive all the way to Austin from SW San Antonio, just to "try" what I was selling. I decided to go the GC route, and came away without such a painful loss. $730 for the following: DSL100 bought used for $400, Vox 5w AC4, Ampeg Micro Stack bass amp, and the DSL15c. All together, I probably spent about $1300 acquiring those items, and was expecting about 50% of value.

I didn't buy them to turn a profit, and I certainly got some good use out of them. I can dig it.

I can dig that....I sold some stuff at Guitar Sinner at a huge loss. After that, I gave most stuff away to people.

Thanks, eSGEe. A few years ago, we could count on a $700-$1000 refund.
I console myself with the thought that, had I worked a second job to provide
more for my family this year, I'd be owing even more taxes now!

Did any of youse guys pay attention to the fact that your withholdings were less this year with the new tax law? Ya got more in your paycheck but you still needed to see what you were going to owe.
Yep. I wasn’t blind to that fact, nor was I complaining about the fact that I owed(I had no difficulty in paying, and understand why). However, in order to “not owe the man”, I would have had to re-file a W2 with my employers to schedule additional withholdings. I am maxed on standard withholding as it is...so...now, if I don’t want to owe, I have to specify what is pulled from my payroll on my own. That is not normal.

Once again...

If you get back money that means
you paid TOO MUCH in taxes all year long
and lost whatever interest you would have gotten
on that money if it was sitting in your bank account
investment portfolio or whatever money "thingy" you use.

You know that guy who bought $20.00 worth of lottery tickets and was thrilled that he won $5.00?
He also got back $6,000.00 from federal and $3,500.00 from state after he filed his taxes.

Honestly, I didn't, but my pay bucket didn't increase this year...not by a penny more.
Sorry to come across as complaining. I just need to plan better.

Welcome to the club sir. It is epidemic this year.
This was the first year I owed federal taxes....ever.

Me too.

My wife asked me what we should do for our anniversary this year. I suggested we take a tour of the IRS headquarters building since a lot of the money we were saving up for our anniversary went toward paying taxes.

no that didnt effect me --- the removal of all deductions -- screwed me--
I work from home-- but was NOT previously an independent contractor--(I am NOW!!!)
LOST-- GONE-- =
home office/Sq. ft. mortgage deduction
power %
internet
office supplies
software programs
business cell phone
shipping
travel
fuel /mileage/ meals etc

all paid out of pocket -- all NON DEDUCTIBLE as of 2018-- been in sales 30 years -- always had the deductions-- made equipment and software efficiency purchase upgrades -- travel decisions etc based on GETTING a deduction ZERO deductions ---

no I got straight shafted -- no sugar coating-- period

Adrian got hit hard directly on the business deductions in addition to the withholding calculation.

It is widespread.
The IRS makes adjustments to the withholdings schedule.
It cant be all that hard to match the withholding to the rate for that pay period and the W-4 exemptions.
This has not happened before since in my taxpayer lifetime.

I think they did it on purpose to make Trump look bad.
They discriminated against conservative groups filing for non-profit status in the Obama era.

It is possible they did not take into account the exemptions are eliminated on the tax return form and figured in elsewhere, as in the increase in the Standard Deduction.
If so, MORONS - that is their job.

Even so, I changed my W-4 to zero in May last year after considering the way my 2017 worked out - we were coming up short.
We would have owed about $1200 for 2018 if not for some other credits - that we wont have this year.

MORONS or Saboteurs?

The IRS is working on a major change to the W-4 which will make it much more complex. It will be a lot like filling out your taxes.

The goal is to set up your withholding so you neither owe money, nor get a refund.

I’m sure it won’t eliminate them entirely, especially for situations involving self-employment and investments. But, hang on to your butts, because all of our HR departments are in for a shocker as they try to figure out how to help employees figure this thing out.

Supposedly, you can review what they are working on at the IRS website and leave a comment.

That did affect me slightly. But, the $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes hurt me, too.

Fortunately, at work I can log onto our system and just make changes to my withholding without even needing to contact HR. I can do the same with my 401k. Since the 401k is pre-tax, I both reduced my W-4 exemptions and increased my 401k contribution.

I see you guys are paying mucho in taxes. I just saw on the news that all blue democrat states are hit with higher taxes , due to Mr. Trump being behind this increase.
