Teenage Language...

I've noticed throughout the years since the 80's that teenagers like to use the word "like" very often. Is this some teenage special word passed on from generation to generation? I hear it all of the time and it like drives me crazy...like! I'll give you an example of a teenage conversation:

"Like my teacher just like gave us a test and like she failed me for no like reason. That was pretty like rude of her...like"

WTF? Why is this word "like" used by teenagers so much in our society of today? I guess that's why they like Face Book because it has "like" buttons...like you know what I mean man?

I noticed that some time ago. It's constant with many. I thought it was weird, until I remembered that I used to say "Choice", in the early 80's.

We all got our thing. Like, ya know what I mean.

bitchin to the max

Was the word "like" used alot in the 1970's? It's like you are older than me...like how was in back in the stone ages when you were born. Wink wink, nudge nudge...a nod is as good as a wink to a blind bat!

I see teens text when they are in the same room as each other. Like, there's no need to, like, talk anymore.

My wife and I were just talking about how people add "you know?" after each sentence. My brother does it. My mother-in-law does it. Lot's of us do it, you know? It's like what the older generation says.

It kills me when my daughters start a text conversation with me, you've got the damn phone in your hand, just freekin call me!!
It's called progress. Cave drawings, smoke signals, printing press, telegraph, telephone, email, texting... Next step back (I mean forward) will be morse code.

Having worked as a teacher in secondary school for 12 years, I have seen how cellphones have gone from being something some of the kids had to seemingly being an extension of every single human being's body. It is interresting to see how many people (mainly grown-ups age 40+)seem to think the kids' way of using the available technology is a step back in human evolution. It is a NEW WAY of communicating, not the end of communication. And the fact that lots of older people don't like this is just fuel to the fire. Kids want to do things differently from their parents. They'll be ok. Most kids are great, just like people in general.

That's a really good statement you made. I guess technology is making us more sociable via smartphone or computer. I remember as a kid living at home with a rotary phone and a black & white television. I had a computer (Apple //c) that I logged into BBS (Bulletin Board Service) which is somewhat like the internet. It's amazing how technology has advanced since I was a teenager. It's phenomenal!
