In my Friday evening haze, I just lost control of opening a sparkling wine and most of it ended up over the guitar... I was pleased the little Epi has a poly finish, so no harm done; rock 'n roll (& no nitro damaged...).

But, feeling sorry for the Yellow Monster who has given me plenty of joy already, I thought she needed a treat, a new amp to expand my horizons. I was thinking of a 10" speaker (maybe larger), as I like the openness that gives in comparison with the Yamaha THR10.

Over the last few years I've had three low wattage tube amps which I sold off for various reasons although I liked them all:

Randall RD 1 - a great little amp, imho.
Bugera T5 with ENGL 10" cab - sounded really nice, the cab helped a lot, imho.
Marshall DSL5 with Celestion 10" greenback - very nice (could have done with a tad more clean at low volume and a tad more variety of sounds.

&, with all the talk of ss amps, I've done quite a look of looking this week (remember that Korea is expensive for guitar stuff, and my only other real option is Thomann because their amps share the same voltage and plugs), and come up with a few ideas:

1) Orange 35RT. $300. I don't need the wattage, but it's the first Orange with a 10" speaker, and I've never owned an Orange (and I suspect they may be really underated and great). I worry that this ios old technology and just doesn't sound as good as more recently designed amps.

2) Fender Champion 40. $220. 12" speaker could be nice. The Fender sounds I especially like are bassman and princeton, and other digital/modelling amps don't do it like Fender can do Fender. Ideally, I'd like a nice AC30 sound in the amp, and the Mustang 1 that I had a few years ago (when I worked in Oman...) was poor at non-Fender amp recreation.

3) Marshall Code 25. $220. It's a Marshall and some folks say good words. Others, including our respected expert on all stuff guitar - Mr. eSGEe, reckons it's not very good.

VOX AV15/30. $240/$340. I'd prefer the 10", but it's quite expensive. Some folks rave about them, especially the AC30 and Marshall sounds - that's gotta be good. Other folks say less positive things about the VOX modelling amps. Can it do the Fender and/or Mesa sound well (I'm not asking for much...).

Marshall DSL1CR. $335. I could just revert to my normal, successful to some extent, but..., course of getting a small tube amp. I like Marshall, but I wouldn't say I like it over Fender, VOX or Mesa, so it might be very limiting and it has a small speaker which'll need replacing - the DSL 5 I had sounded fizzy and unpleasant with the standard speaker, imho.

Or, alternatively:

Get a 'Mesa' with a 12" vintage speaker cab. $350. It's a one-trick pony, and maybe even not a good trick... I still get the cab and can try other heads (and the head might be great too).

Just get the 12" cab. $200 delivered to Korea... Worry about the head later.

To note, this 1w Blackstar head is available locally for $200

at the shop that I got the Les Paul Special from, and they just sent me an email asking if there's anything they can do as way of an apology about the poor state the Epi turned up in; I could suggest a discount on this head... In my experience, discounts aren't part of Korean culture, but I should try right... :D

Obviously, an important question is: what will you be using it for. &, the answer is, I have no idea, very little, I just want stuff. Or, I wanna expand my practicing and home playing a bit, enjoy myself and have a couple of guitars/amps for jamming when my mate(s) pop around on a Friday night for beers...

I'd go with the Marshall Code from that list.
Wouldn't be my first choice for myself but I do realise that there's a wealth of Marshall amps, ready to be recalled, at your disposal.
But there's a steep learning curve from what I understand.
And the power rating would be enough to satisfy.

The DSL, with a bullet. It's the only real amp on the list, so to me the only real choice. (The Blackstars have a nice base tone too, but the lack of a real tone stack sidelines it for me)

But I got a special! :)

The Marshall will give more cleans and headroom with the Epi than the Gibson, so it could be a very good match to give a wider variety of sounds. Comes with reverb, which is good, but the speaker is small and would need changing. Thus, how about the 1w Marshall head with the HB 12" C-vintage speaker?

I am very curious about that DSL actually, a new head is $299 and can be found a little cheaper at times, I am also curious about the DSL20's also. I am chasing my old DSL50 Green channel but those have been climbing in price. I did find a clean one for $560 but local pick-up only and 4 hours away :(

It's strange in a way, the great Marshall sounds are fantastic and some amps get you there without 100w wall of speakers. But, the concept of having 4 or more of your favourite amps in one package for $300 sounds great - is it too good to be true?

I've also been considering these VOX MV50 with a cab:

Screenshot 2019-03-23 at 02.12.24.png

They are 50w, but only 25w with an 8 ohm cab, and the "clean" version has an attenuator which can bring it down to .25w or 2.5w - that could be nice.

how can getting a lot of head be a bad choice????

I am leaning that way, but want to hear other folks' suggestions/experience.

The last hour I've been looking at the Hotone 5w heart attack and the 20w joyo zombie. To my ears, for $83.60, the Hotone sounds good. But, if I don't like it then I can get a Blackstar 1w or a tiny weeny VOX locally at reasonable prices.

Well, for quite a while now I only buy heads and cabs. Much more versatile and easier to mix-and-match, so that ultimately would be my personal choice. I think that little DSL-1 head would be great through a 1x12, and you can always use it with other cabs and upgrade the speaker down the line.

In real life they are nothing more than toys. Don't waste your money.

They sound ok through a 412... :D

Ordering the cab through Thomann and paying the $50 delivery fee already, I might as well grab a sub-$100 head because it doesn't incur any delivery charge and still stays under $400, so I don't have to pay 30% import tax. &, I can buy a nicer head locally too.

On line they do-----

Im doubting that thing pushes a 4x12 at ALL in real life---

But, they'll push a 112 which is all I'll be needing. Then I'll pick up a quality 1w or 5w or 20w or even 40w dsl or similar head at a later date (maybe sooner...). I'll think about it, wait for more suggestions then maybe go with the 112. I must say that a good speaker/cab is a great starting point for good sound, then I can slowly work my way back to the player... :cautious:

Hey man -- Im not telling you NOT to do it-- Ive watched them little HOtones since the first one what was it the Purple Wind? Hell they make a bass one too--- for whatever reason I just never get around to GETTING one---
Agreed a good cab can be a great thing-- and you can mod adn run all sorts of things into it-- you can sample different speakers---different heads---SS heads vs Hybrid Vs Tube.....

its a WIDE OPEN array of many many new options :)

Go try one. In real life they are sonic poo, I don't care what cab they are attached to. A waste of money really, because after fiddling with it for a few minutes you will realize its useless and put it back in the box.

Voted for Vox, I have a VT30 and it’s pretty darn good

Just wish more settings available online like there is for the Mustang series

How about a buy a Mahalo amp option? I can't afford one, but the few I've played sounded great to say the least.

Please consider a Micro Dark head from Orange with a PPC 1x12 cab. Hybrid: SS power amp with tube preamp, 20 watts,
effects loop, and sounds almost a great as my Dark Terror for hundreds of $$ less. This can easily drive a 4x12!
Cab comes with a V30 - No need to upgrade!
