I'm beginning to think that for my style of playing, perhaps the WGS Reaper 50 watt/55Hz may not be the best choice in my DSL40C.

Who is using what???

Best speaker I have ever used, ever, in an open-back/combo cabinet is the Mesa/Celestion C-90:

Speaker - 12" Celestion Custom 90 - UK Made

It's built from the ground up for high gain in an open cab but also sounds great clean. Has all the low end punch of most 12's in a closed-back application. For most things, I actually prefer it to the V30 in a sealed cab.

Is Mesa a UK amplifier???

No. Mesas are made in Petaluma, CA.

The UK reference is to the Celestion speaker. And I don't care what anyone says, the UK-made Celestions are much better-sounding than than the Chinese ones. I will. not. buy Chinese Celestions again, only UK-made ones.

I saw a Celestion G-12-P-80 the other day made in UK - on a musical pal's workbench....

I agree...but the 55Hz is an unknown to me. It was recommended by Trevor English at WGS.

What was he recommending it for. Actually curious.

And I like WGS too, and have had great luck with all of the ones I have tried. But I don't find them as rewarding to play as English Celestions (they crush the Chinese Celestions). There is something just more present, detailed and immediate about the best Celestions that no other speakers match for me.

He felt like it would better handle high gain at higher volumes and retain clarity.

I'm using pre-rola Celstions in my Hiwatt cabinet. Mice chewed and made a nest out of the original Fane's.........Long story.

Ah. Got it. Best one of theirs that I have used for high gain is the British Lead. It's even better than the ET-65 in my opinion. Still not quite as good as a Mesa C-90 though.

I'm going to move on your suggestion and put the 70/80 back in an keep the current JJ-EC823/JJ-5751/7025-WA/JJ-EC83MG tube layout.

You think that British-made G-12-80-P is any better than my 70/80??? I never heard of that particular Celestion model...????

What about an evaluation trade for testing???

I can send you this Reaper 55HZ (still have original box) and you can see if it acts like it has for me, or if it's just the voices in my head... :)

I'm taking the Vintage 30 out of a 4x14 cabinet for you to test. I was going to tear the 4x12 down and sell the speakers at some point. It's just too big for me...
