For the past 11 years have had 3 new computers using Windows. I am not happy with windows and now have been on windows 10 which I find a disaster. My pc is about 5yrs old now and thinking about getting a new one in the next 5mths or so. I don't like windows at all they always keep changing things. taking good things they had in the past. Tired of all this apps stuff, and they want you to pay for drivers to make things work that use to be in the system. So I told my Wife maybe we should switch over to Apple/ Macintosh. So i'm looking to investigate now into this. I have learned to investigate before I jump into it. What do you think? Stay with Windows or go over to Mac?

if you have never USED a Mac-- you MIGHT want to stay with Windows based systems-- Macs are cool and fun and do MANY things-- they have garage band etc. -- back in the day we used them EXCLUSIVELY in the printing art and ad business-- but they dont (or didnt) always "mesh" with all OTHER systems and programs and dowloads and I was always looking for "work arounds" to get --- attachments to open or things to WORK sent from windows users--- not that may have changed I havent had a Mac in 8 years--- but-- Ive not had to do any of those work arounds either.

I’m on Mac at home, and we mix it up at work. The document exchange is not like it used to be. I can do stuff on an iPad, and send it to my work email, open it on the work pc etc. You just have to be conscious of the document format when saving(maybe). Word, and pdf files haven’t been a problem for me.
I got sick of getting windows towers that turned in to lemons back in 2010. We plowed through 3 towers in my home office inside of 16 months. I got my first Mac, a Mini, in mid 2010. I just replaced the original hard drive in it a couple of weeks ago. (Swapped in a Solid State Drive) The little old Mini cooks again now.
It spent the first 8.5 years of its life “on” constantly, as a media server, mostly, in my living room. Once in a while, I’d do some fooling around with audio, and video, stuff with it.
So, granted it was more expensive than any two of my previous PC towers, it has been a reliable little box. The new hard drive was all of $65, and I upgraded the ram years ago...I don’t remember the price on the ram, but it wasn’t anything crazy. It may run for a few more years, but it is considered “obsolete” now by apple. So, no more OS upgrades...just security updates/support for maybe 2 more years, and then I’ll have to take it offline I guess.
In 2011-12 I put an iMac in the home office that is still running fine too...no repairs etc.
I just bought a new Mac Mini for home server duty, and playing with audio, and video in the living room.
Although they may not mesh perfectly with Windows machines, they mesh with each other flawlessly. I can work on my iPad, in my hammock in the backyard...then move to my office and pick up where I left off...then pick it up at work, and print it from my phone, or email on the main PC.

I’m definitely a fan of good quality hardware...Mac has been good to me.
 
DOnt get me wrong-- I loved my Macs -- still have one in the closet (iMac) I inted to get BACK UP AND RUNNING one day but served well for 12 years ---they are built like tanks (liek the Peavey of computers) BUT -- unlike PEavey--- they AINT CHEAP--

I now usually run a used laptop or desk top sourced from a pawn shop- foir under 200.00 -- get 2-6 years outta them -- keep back ups on drives-- and when they die I toss em and grab another --- I cant see buying a computer that cost more than I paid for my truck-- or my Motorcycle -- HELL the new iMac is more than I paid for the DOdge Dakota my wife drives AND the Motorcycle COMBINED---

To the subject at hand...I will never go to a Mac based on my recent experience of getting an iPhone forced on me at work.

Apple tries too hard to hold people hostage and force them to either use their product exclusively or buy add ons.

Here is my situation...I get this new iPhone, I take some pictures, I hook the phone by USB to my Windows 10 computer...and nothing.
No drive letter or folder pops up with my pictures. I do a Google search...and...you can't just download to a PC from an iPhone. You have to
use iTunes or the iCloud or pay for and install an app on your iPhone.

All of these things involve additional software, time, steps, money outlay, etc, etc...

If I didn't have to use this iPhone for work as a requirement it would be long gone...
 
THAT! is exactly the type "work around" I was referring to--- sorry I was a bit vague--- it happens -- I get tired of typing-- and reading---and reading my typing and editing my typing and ---ugh

That’s weird...I’ve done that before...but with XP...so, long ago...like 2012.
This is a copy paste from an article about multiple methods of transfer:

Transfer Photos from iPhone to PC
If you have a PC with an older version of Windows, Auto Play will pop-up when your iPhone is connected to your computer with a USB cable. On a PC with Windows 8, your computer will detect the device and provide a pop-up that says, Tap to choose what happens to this device. When you click on that pop-up, you’ll see the option to Import Photos and Videos. The rest of the process should be pretty similar to what is below. When in doubt, look for the Import button.

We’re going to focus on getting photos onto your computer with Windows 10. Like the Mac, Windows has a Photos app for easy import and organization.

  • Plug your iPhone into your computer with the USB cable.

  • The Photos app should automatically launch. If it doesn't, launch the program using the Windows Start menu or search bar.

  • Click the Import icon in the upper right corner of the Photos app.

I can understand your feelings on this Chris. I was the same way for a long time too. I just got sick of massive hardware failures that I experienced...well mostly my roomie...I had to clean up the mess. If one is tenacious enough, one can usually find some work arounds though.

...and most of the work arounds are complex and time consuming....

Really? It has the instructions for Windows 10 right after the first paragraph that I pasted in, above.
I’m not at work to try it(we have a Windows 10 box, without iTunes on it). I can’t try it until Thursday, but I will. I’m running the latest iOS on my phone. I’ll post back.
It should work with the native Windows 10 photo program.
It, for sure, works on Mac without iTunes, by using the photos program there.

I struggled for an hour before I just decided to use drop box. That was a long drawn out process. Something that should take 2 or 3 minutes took well over 30.

Agreed...definitely shouldn’t have been that much trouble. As I’ve said, I’ve done it before on a Windows box, but I’ve been running Mac at home almost exclusively since 2012...I still have my xp box in the studio, but that’s rarely on now, and never networked anymore.
I’ve done it on Mac fairly recently too...pulled 12GB of photos and video from an old iPhone, without using iTunes, directly to an external drive connected to the Mac. The only problem that came up was that iTunes started as soon as I plugged in the phone...I shut it(iTunes) down, and transferred manually(as I prefer to do). I’m sorry to hear of your troubles.
I only use iTunes, and iPhoto to organize the things I choose to have them organize. Most of my music, photos, and video, exist in non-Mac program form on multiple external drives. I’m currently working on some changes to my place of employment that will expand my storage to another secure off site location too. I know that you have an extensive library of really cool material too(far more than I have)...an off site backup for something like that is a must.

I hate to be the guy to tell you Chris, Windows is exactly the same as Mac. I have windows 10 it absolutely sucks! They want you to buy drivers and apps to run certain things. I know other guys they HATE WINDOWS 10, unfortunately looks to me they are all the same. People didn't like 8.1, it sure was better than this 10. I can't even download backing tracks onto my Mp3 Player. It doesn't recognize in my devices. Couldn't use my Tascam, until Don helped me out I had to buy a pocket reader to plug into my pc so I could download Tascam into it , then make a file for music so I could make a track for sound cloud. I don't like computers and I never will. All they are is money , money and more money. Sorry I got carried away like Adrian...……….:D:D

I've been running Windows of some generation since the 80's when you loaded it off a 5 1/4" floppy. I built my own PC's since the 8088 processor and no hard drive.
I grew up on it, I understand it and it has always worked for me! When I plug my Android phone into my Windows 10 PC a file folder pops up with all my pictures in it.
I copy and paste from the phone to the PC in 30 seconds...

I have had Zero Issues with Windows 10 on any of my recording devices or interfaces or music software. Basically trying to interface this MAC device is the 1st and only issue...

They can shove this iPhone up their @$$...the only reason I have it is because it was forced on me by my employer and I'm required to use it...

So be it then. If your mind is made up, then it’s done.
I’ve had similar issues in the past, but I’ve managed to overcome them.
I’ve been recording digitally since 1998. (AKAI DPS12 then DPS24 in 2003-4...still working)
I’ve also cut my teeth on Windows systems...had my share of troubles too...always found a work around...it is a shame that I lost faith...but it is what it is for me.
My XP box dates back to 2006...an HP box that I gutted, and made my own. It still works. I had to cut the bloat out of it to run my studio gear, but I had it tuned to record up to 32(yep-thirty two) tracks of simultaneous live input, at 24 bits—-48k(that was way back in 2008). That involved a full tear down, new drives, fresh custom OS install(self), plus some peripheral hardware...a PITA, but worth it...and it still runs...as the day I built it. It’s a shame no current hardware will run on it, and it’s not secure to network.
I walked my roomie through this a couple of years ago, with her iPad and windoze laptop. She got through it.
 
I used to build PCs for friends and family. It was a PIA sometimes. MAC was easier to set up. I never went MAC back in the day because there was 10 times more PC software. A confession: I rarely bought software. My computer nerd friends and I shared hacked software. I haven't paid for anything in years. You should see my collection of effects and recording software. The only thing I bought was a USB interface.
