String Tree Spacers:

It's just metal tubing - you can buy it by the foot on Ebay and cut whatever lengths you like. My Jeff Beck signature Strat doesn't have trees, and doesn't seem to need them.

I considered eliminating them, but my high 'e' jumps out of the nut on deep tremolo dives.

You mean, to set the trees higher off the face of the headstock?

You could try not even using them. I run my strings right over the tree. They pass about 1 -2 mm above it. They never touch the tree and you really have to look closely to see that it isn’t being used.

I’ve done some fairly deep dives without issues.

When you say deep, do you mean so deep that the string goes slack and just loops itself out of the nut?

That’s kind of what gave me the idea to forego the tree altogether. I didn’t want to remove it because I didn’t want the unsightly look of a screw hole in the face of my headstock. But, as you’ve pointed out, it seems to work fine without it.
 
I run a decked tremolo with 5 springs. I did a dive recently on a recording of Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers. It was a full dive until the strings went slack and rattled on the pickups, then a return to pitch with 8 rapid tonal undulations and delay. It really was a neat effect.

To tree or not to tree, that is the question. I’ve done 2 Warmoth Strat neck guitars and have debated that with myself. So far I bought trees but have not installed them.

Two things, really. First it isn't a comfortable thing to jam your hand against - it's all metal edges. But mainly because it doesn't actually function as a roller. The row of ball bearings is trapped - they can't move at all. And the thinner the string, the deeper it drops between adjacent balls. I play with .008s and they are effectively pinched, like in a badly cut nut. It would probably be OK with .013s.
