That's exactly what I was thinking, too! The fan guitar does have a slightly different tone to it. But, he still sounds good playing it.

I think getting a signature on the guitar is pretty much why people bring guitars to concerts.

At 0:48 you can see a stage hand attempt to give John a marker to sign the guitar. Apparently, he thought John took the guitar just to sign it. Then he backs away when it's clear John intends to play it, instead.

At 2:30 John motions to the audience (presumably, the guitar owner) for a marker. Then, the stage hand reappears and hands John the marker. So, I think a signature was expected all along.

But, this does beg a question....did the owner want the signature on the FACE of the guitar!
