Gibson P90s Versus Wolfetone P90s (My own video attempt)

Here you go Dudes and Duddettes… A learning experience for sure...

Besides the lack of better playing skills, I'm also very challenged in the world of shooting and editing videos. I set the height of the Wolfetones identical to what the Gibsons were. The Wolfetones are quite a bit louder, and I had to reduce the recording volume of the camera to keep the signal from distorting.

The video demonstrates the pickups in only a Clean mode. I used my Allen Sweet Spot. A small bit of extra info is included under descriptions:

I'll introduce another demo featuring these pups under overdrive conditions using my old JCM800. The videos have been recorded, but I need time to splice it all together.

Nice work syscokid!! I would take the Wolfetones hands down, I like the clean tones of them ,and seem to me to have more punch. To me they also have more clarity.

Nice job sir!
The Wolftones have a lower mid bump in their output...more bark.
The Gibsons are clearer, but thinner sounding than the Wolftones.
Your, Gibson P90 loaded, Townsend Special sounds much like my 2011 P90 60s special sounded before I swapped out the stock Gibson P90s. I went a little hot with my replacements though.
I like the Wolftones in this application.
I really like my Gibson P90s in my big guard P90 Standard though, and have no intention of replacing them...at all.(different pickup placement...relative to the bridge...makes a huge difference, I think)

Yes!!!!

I should also mention that the tone knobs in my P90 60s Special lived around 8 on the dial to remedy the thin sound. That worked well for me. I just wanted to get a more Sabbath-like sound, and was hoping that the hotter pickups would do the trick.
Now I have to roll back the volume to get close to the clean sound of the original pickups. Easy enough though.

Excellent video.

Super lovely wonderful guitar. Very good playing, Sir.

Now, I'm gonna go against the grain here... I preferred the Gibson puppies because they had more 'thickness' and 'presence' than the Wolftones. The Wolftones had more jangle and sparkle, but if I wanted that I'd put down the SG and pick up a tele. With max volume the Wolftones had a nice bark, but that's only because their higher output pushed the amp further than the Gibson puppies - the Gibson puppies, their 'girth', should come alive with some gain - that's the territory I'd want an SG Special in.

I agree with suggestions above that it depends on your application, style, preferences. I'm not sure one is better than the other per se.

Sysco, this is you playing this, right? I know, Imma dummy and you can say DUH YEAH it's me. I am 99% sure it is u and as the you tube site says, Townshend SG.

BTW I like the demo.

Both sound good to me . The Gibby pup seem to be a little higher output,Both have good jangle but the Wolftones might be clearer.

AAAAAHH THAT GLORIOUS FEEDBACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WELL PLAYED-- hAM?? THERE IS hAM???? wheres the ham?

Everybody's comments are interesting and well appreciated. I like both brands of these pups, too. But I do need to fiddle with the height of the Wolfetones, which were set at the same height of the Gibsons.

A big part of this project was to experience what its like to do your own video demos. I've come to the conclusion that I do not have enough patience and time that im willing to spend, to get a good grasp on this stuff.

You are not alone in this sentiment. Decent mic’s and video are a pita. I’ll stick to mostly audio recording. Slideshow type videos are way easier for audio demos to me.

I finally got around to splicing together the Dirty side of this P90 pickup comparison. I couldn't help myself, and hammed it up a bit towards the end... :hide:

Dang Sysco, You are tearing it up man..Very Good Playing buddy..those P-90's Sounds Awesome..

that's a good lookin' SG too..Lovin' the Wraptail..:yesway:

Good stuff, Sysco - I really enjoyed that; the feedback was great!

I like both of the puppies this time. The neck positions were really different, but perhaps I slightly preferred the Wolftones (which surprised me) although I reckon with a bit more gain from the amp I'd like the Gibson neck sound. The bridge sounds were closer, and the Gibson bridge was my very favourite sound on the demo when you kicked on the Silver Pony.

I love that guitar!

Just to be clear, that is a fantastically sexy guitar. :dood:
