Microphone use

I used a few mics and there a lot of good ones. But the one mic I always try to keep around, because I consider it versatile, is the good ole SM57.

An SM57 works well for instruments and vocals. It's a good all purpose mic. I've been told by many people in the industry that the only difference between an SM57 and SM58 is the wind screen. Otherwise, they are the exact same mic.

I've tossed more than one SM57 into the back a combo amp, maybe sitting on a washcloth or something so it doesn't rattle - simple, easy, worked well ;)

I've been told the newer SM57 don't hold up like the older ones - I can't say either way myself. But, you could drop the old SM57's on concrete and they'd keep going - another reason I liked them.

I like the SM58's too, but, as you stated, the SM57 worked well for vocals and instrument mic'ing which covered my uses, so I generally just got SM57's.
